New Cool Tool Borescope

One of my favorite YouTube channels is South Main Auto. Eric O is an excellent diagnostician who injects much-needed humor into frustrating tasks. In one of his recent episodes, he demonstrated a new borescope from DEPSTECH: https://depstech.com/collections/bes...GQnJi49TxNLVlW

I was so impressed that I decided to splurge and buy one myself. The intake manifold on my C250 is off for the oil filter housing replacement, so I took some pictures of the valves. The tool is excellent and produces stunning images. The state of the valves is also stunning. Despite the carbon build-up on the valves and the valve chamber, the engine runs like a top and returns 32 mpg even after 220,000 miles. I've never seen valves with this many deposits.

The urban legend is that the buildups on the valves are blown out by getting it out on the highway and up to speed early and often.

Nifty tool @alynch ! I was looking at the Milwaukee tool borescope.

Impressive to hear the mileage your c250 has and seeing the condition of the valves at 220k!

The majority of my mileage was interstate, around 600 miles per week. Very, very few short trips. The urban legend may have been related to port injection engines. I've seen several articles on the build-up on valves in direct injection engines. I'm just amazed that the engine runs so well. Although there is build-up, there doesn't appear to be any on the back of the valves or the valve sealing surfaces. I wonder if the engine designers knew carbon would build up in the valve chamber but designed it such a way that none of this build-up would affect the basic function and sealing of the valves.
