M271 Intake Tube Question

Recently I took my C250 in for a fuel issue (unrelated to this post) and I was talking to the tech who was an experience MB dealer tech - he noticed the yellow markings on the intake tube piping (see photo) and said that means its been replaced. I‘m mostly just really curious on this one.

Does anyone know if that’s true? I bought the car when it was 3 years old, I have the previous MB dealer list of services/records and there’s no mention of this.

Do those marking mean it was replaced? Maybe it was in an accident so was replaced outside of warranty.

All that means is someone marked the right way to put it back on with marker/chalk for when it was reinstalled. Most likely it was just removed for a different repair and reinstalled.

Worth noting, I’m not guaranteed to be right. However in my area and as far as I’ve ever seen, that’s the only reason to ever make those markings on parts.

I have to agree with @hmclaughlin67 . Mine didn’t have it from the factory and didn’t have it after replacing the largest of the 3 in the picture because I did it. I am not saying none do it, but I have never seen marks like that from repairs done at a dealer or at an independent German car shop. For safety related components that require torquing, the factory uses green enamel as a “tattletale” to show if the part has been loosened. Dealers I am familiar with use red enamel for the same reason and to distinguish a repair.

thanks guys. good info.

My guess is that it was probably removed or replaced as part of an accident repair. Since the car was always under warranty before I bought it, any repair would have been captured in the dealer VMI log that I have.

There’s evidence of repainting on the back panel near the fuel door. Windshield was replaced before (MB replaced it again as part of CPO because they dont allow aftermarket windshields). Some evidence that front bumper has been removed.

Also the car had seeping/leaking steering rack since I bought it, and I too wonder if an accident cause that because every MB says they have almost never replaced a steering rack on a W204.

Hope this car holds up for a while now without much repairing. Only has 68k miles. Paid off in late 2024. My wallet has taken a big hit in the last 12 months. Tires, brakes, alignment, transmission service, steering rack, fuel injector repair - all in, north of 5 grand.

Like new now! W204s don’t require a whole plot of maintenance and M271 is quite economical. Should be good for another 90-100k miles.
