I’m having trouble with my W204 steering wheel buttons where some work but others don’t. The car is a facelift model (2012 or later), but when I checked the instrument cluster through Engineering Mode, it shows software dates from 2010, which makes me think it might still be a pre-facelift cluster.
So far, I’ve replaced the entire steering wheel button assembly, swapped the clock spring and steering column module, but the problem remains the same. The Audio20 system also shows an error code (01-4C-84003), which seems to be a communication issue. One thing to note is that the airbag is currently disconnected. I’m not sure if that could be affecting the CAN bus signals.
I’m wondering if the cluster being from a pre-facelift model is causing compatibility problems with the facelift steering wheel buttons. Maybe the cluster needs recoding, or perhaps it’s just not fully compatible. If anyone has dealt with something similar or has suggestions on what to check next, I’d really appreciate any advice.

Did you buy that car like that? Check the EPC for the steering wheel key and column module references. I don't think the IC has anything to do with it.
It may be that the it was head unit that was swapped out for a pre-facelift version. The facelift models have, I believe, NTG 4.5. The pre-facelift may have had NTG 4.0. Maybe compatibility problems originate there.
