Long Trip Discussions

I just completed a trip from the Poconos here in PA, down to near the West Palm Beach area, and back without ever having my car rest more than two hours. We left Wednesday night after I got out of work at around 10pm, and drove there and back and just got back home at 7pm Friday night. We had a bit of an emergency to attend to in FL so we only were able to stay for about an hour and a half and then had to turn around. I drove all but 2 hours of this, wife drove that while I slept for a bit in the passenger seat.

This got me curious to know, what’s the longest all of you guys have had the pleasure of driving these cars at a time for? It was pleasantly comfortable with only very minor soreness and tightness that’s unavoidable even if it was an S class. My now 190k miles C300 is making these trips without missing a beat thankfully.

Did stuff like that when I was younger, but not anymore.

How was I-95 between Richmond and DC? That's a nightmare most of the time.

The way down we hit it around 1-2am so it was perfectly fine. On our way back up though we skipped it all together and cut through West Virginia to take 81 instead.

I’m 20 at the moment so I definitely enjoy being able to do it while I can lol. I was pleasantly surprised how much the seats recline too, made sleeping real easy.

I love grand touring. Haven't done quite this much in one go, but done a few ~12 hour drives. My all time favorites are still my European Delivery trips. Picking up my brand new car at the factory in Germany and then travel through Europe with it before shipping it to the USA. Did my last one in 2019 with my current C63. Unfortunately MB terminated the program during the pandemic. Travelled through Europe for almost 2.5 months and 7000 miles. Longest leg was three countries in about 11 hours from Switzerland through Germany to Denmark. Blasting through Germany at up to 180 mph (legally) and a ferry ride from Germany to Denmark around midnight with the sun just setting due to being that far north. Epic trip. I killed an army of insects on that drive. The car needed a good scrubbing before I dropped it off at the port in Germany afterwards for its journey to the USA. Another epic drive during that trip was the Stelvio Pass (2nd and 3rd pic).

I bought my E550 while I was unemployed in 2020... to pay the meager $200 monthly I just did Ubereats a few times a month. I'm a fine dining server by night, semi-absentee shop owner by day. I would be in the car for 8-10 hours a day sometimes.

My back feels better when I get out of the car than I do getting up from my $2000 mattress in the morning or out of my Haworth Very chair. I think the active lifestyle of running around and delivering food probably helped my mobility too.

Thats incredible. I never even knew that’s something that MB used to do. I’ve always wanted to head up to the autobahn in one of these and just let it rip. One of my dream cars (semi-realistic one) is a 507 edition C63 coupe in black.

Yes, all German premium brands offered this plus Volvo (Sweden), but gradually discontinued it for various reasons. BMW discontinued it first, because most Americans buy SUVs and all the X models are made in the USA, so they were not eligible for the program, so not many still took advantage of it. Audi then stopped theirs for similar reasons as the Q5 is made in Mexico and the Q7 is made on Slovakia. Then the remaining ones went on hiatus when international travel came to a halt and MB decided to just discontinue theirs instead of restarting it after the pandemic. As far as I know, Porsche still offers it and I haven't heard if Volvo still does it. It was amazing while it lasted. Couldn't make it work for many years, but then did my first one in 2013 with Audi for 1 month and the second one as said in 2019 with Mercedes.

Looks like the last one standing at least for North America is porsche.
