Diagnostic Tool Recommendation

I am looking for an inexpensive (but not cheap) diag tool for my 08 c300. I'd also like to be able to use it for my other vehicles so nothing locked down for MB only. I've seen videos of units that show diagrams and can activate certain modules in the car from the diag tool.

I'd actually like 2 recommendations. A good diag tool as well as a good diag tool that would allow me to read/write to the SAM units (I believe I have a bad SAM and already have the replacement for it). I am more looking for the price difference to see if it may be worth getting the upgrade verses the regular diag tool plus paying someone else to read/write the SAM for me. I hope I never have to replace another SAM but with as moisture sensitive as these things seem to be, I won't be surprised (disappointed maybe) if it happens again. I'd prefer if they didnt require a subscription but if thats an absolute nessessity then so be it. I don't really have a pricerange other than needing my arm and leg to work on this thing as it is currently running, just with a few non-crucial erros.

XENTRY is the best tool you can get, but not cheap. For inexpensive tools, I recommend either the LAUNCH Creader Elite 2.0 BENZ ($139) or the LAUNCH CRP123E Plus ($139 on sale). The Creader Elite 2.0 is specific to Mercedes only (though you can purchase additional brands through the tool’s Mall). However, as of today, software version 50.45 is the latest that can be installed. But with the Creader Elite 2.0, you get full function capability with free lifetime updates. The CRP123E Plus runs version 50.50 for Mercedes. It is a multivehicle scanner with basic functions (read and clear codes) that can be upgraded on a brand by brand basis to give full functionality, such as programming and making configuration changes (ECO START/STOP, Speed Limiter, Adaptive Brake Lights, Seat belt chime, etc.).

I should mention that I have many scanners, including XENTRY, AUTEL, iCarsoft, BlueDriver, LAUNCH, Carly, MUCAR, and more. For the price and functionality, LAUNCH is the best value. The LAUNCH Creader Elite 2.0 BENZ and the LAUNCH CRP123E Plus provide nearly the same level of functionality as XENTRY. However, XENTRY is a complete diagnostic system with step-by-step procedures. (LAUNCH makes really inexpensive generic OBD scanners which I do NOT recommend. I do not recommend ANY generic scanners as they are a waste of money when it comes to diagnosing problems with your Mercedes.)

Another advantage to vehicle specific scanners, such as the Launch, is that the capabilities advertised exist. Multi-vehicle scanners list a large collection of special functions, but not all functions exist across all the vehicle brands. I have several scanners, and the Launch MB 2 provides the most for the money. Its ability to code off auto start/stop was worth many times over what I paid for it.

I have the innova 5610, it will read and erase the mb codes but doesn’t allow active testing like it said it would, atleast not on this car. It’s a $300 scanner that doesn’t do what I need it to do so I’d rather not go down that road again… but if I get a tablet style diag tool, I’d like to make sure it does everything I need before purchasing, hence this post. Will the units you mentioned pull the program settings (forgive if wrong term) from the current SAM and write them to the new SAM? (Front and rear)? Do they show the wire diagrams for tracing down canbus issues? (Already had one issue and expecting more) I watched a YT video for my previous start issue and dude was pulled up diagrams and was able to click on areas of the diagram to automatically open the next area and even showed pictures of where the canbus was located. That would be a nice feature but I can’t seem to find that video again to see what tool he was using.

The LAUNCH tools let you back up module settings before making any changes so that you can recover/restore the settings if you need to. I don’t know how that would work on a replacement module. If you go with the CRP123E Plus you will need to purchase the Mercedes “upgrade” to get access to the programming features. The Creader Elite 2.0 BENZ gives you access without any further upgrade. I have not tried to find or use wiring diagrams other than with XENTRY. To my knowledge, the other tools I listed does not allow you to save current settings. I could be wrong though. The Autel tool I have (MaxiDAS DS808K) may allow the backup since it was $840, but I never tried.

The links for buying the LAUNCH tools are for www.kingbolentool.com. I have purchased from them several times and get fast delivery because they have warehouses in the US. I can say they have the best prices.

I found the video of the diag tool. Dude is using a topdon but he’s pulling the interactive diagram from alldata on the topdon diag. Do any of the units you listed use alldata? Is that a good resource or are there better or more inexpensive ones that also use interactive diagrams? From what I see on the video it actually will show pictures of where each canbus is located and other connections as well.

None of the tools I recommended use alldata. Not sure what tool the guy had in the video, but I suspect it was not a $200 tool.

I’m looking for up to ~$500. Just want something that I can use so I’ll never have to take it to a shop for anything but tires…
