This is s safety feature. In some countries car companies get sued for that. That is why it's not automatic.
Not doubting your explanation, but I am having trouble visualizing the "stuck" position of the seat/person. A little more description would help.

I can imagine a person with a "far above average" size getting stuck between chair and steering wheel because he/she selected the wrong memory setting.
But even a foot accidentally getting stuck under a seat due to a position. If it would just happen to one person it's already enough to get sued.

my steering wheel goes up and the seat does not move back. Same story with both of my parents' MB's.
