W205 Floating centre screen, Love it? Hate it?

Not sure if there is already a post on this... there probably is and I have missed it.

I personally love the iPad-esque floating screen.. I come from a BMW F30 which had a permanent pop up screen and like that screen was moved in the F30 to line of sight pretty much..

Just for fun.. vote and have your say.

Voted love it!
Would be good to have an extra line that says " I hate it .....but have never actually used it"
(Might need to go on the E class forum though )

I admit I didn't like it, until in the car driving and it just kinda floats there. Until screens project, this is a good option)

I'm a techie and originally I hated it. Who wants a fixed cheap looking tablet attached to their car to change radio stations etc... ?

However, after using it for about 4months, I have grown to like it. The truth is, it really feels like a media player, much more so than the in-dash units found in the GLK etc.. The album covers for my music are large and crisp, and comes close to the music experience I get from devices at home.

I can't say that I 'Love' it though, given that its software isn't very intuitive. Also, Its not as snappy as it should be, and the software's look and feel is sure to get old fast if it isn't updated every few years.

What needs to be done, is for MB to opensource the software for it, and support customization of the software by developers. Obviously, for this to be feasible, there needs to be a bullet-proof way to recover in the case of a problematic update, and this may already be there. With so much potential for infotainment, its hard to see how the car-companies will allow it to evolve.

While it doesn't bother me I think MB could have done a better job incorporating it into the dash. Personally I liked the pop up design better on my old 2010 W204. I bet the floating screen will be the first thing to go when designers have their next redesign staff meeting.

I have always hated it. However, after sitting in a W205 for the first time I quickly realized that it is perfect!
Unfortunately it only looks good from the drivers seat. If you look at it from anywhere else it looks terrible, out of place, and like an afterthought.

I've learnt to tolerate it, but would be better if the screen had a thinner frame profile and bezel.

The thick frame around the actual screen is what bothers me the most.

Do you have the larger 8.4" screen with the navi or the regular one?

I have the 8.4 inch screen, but still the frame is too thick. With modern day electronics, there's absolutely no reason for the thick border around it.

I didn't vote in the poll because I couldn't find an answer I liked... I don't hate it but it does bother me that the screen looks dated
If they're gonna put a large LCD in the center at least make it touch screen and more importantly a small bezel so it looks cleaner.

I don't mind the whole "stuck on iPad" look, but that's just personal preference for me. The rumored S-class design will look cleaner though.

Maybe they should of had Apple design it...

I do know that MB would not do a touch screen. Touch screens seem to be a big no-no for German brands. I don't think MB, Audi, or BMW have ever had touch screens.

It's only a matter of time anyway, I think
There just seems to be too much liability and cost at this point

I think it's not a cost issue at all. Touch sensitive screens are relatively cheap. I think it's partly because if people touch their screens for controls then there will be fingerprints and smudges all over it very quickly...

Hated it at first when I saw it, but with every time I sat in the W205, I grew to like it more and appreicate the extra space that the design gives by making the console fall further away.
I do like it now.

I also agree with the above that the bezel around the screen should be thinner to make it a more-pleasing design. Especially taking into account that it's not a tablet (that needs to be held, and thus doesn't need the bezel space)

It doesn't bother me at all when I'm sitting in the car. Like many others here, I do wish the bezels were much smaller and I can imagine that the big bezels will only contribute to making it look outdated sooner rather than later. I also wish it could swivel a few degrees towards the driver.

Either way, I do get the sense that this will look comparatively awkward by the time the refreshed interior comes along.

I love the high resolution aspect of the screen. What I don't like, which is not related to this topic, is the location of the knob/pad and volume control on the console. From the driving position, I have to move my elbow towards the back before I can reach those controls. I hate that.

I think that style will be around for a while. Mercedes seems invested in the floating screen look. The new AMG GTS has a similar looking screen. I like the look.

Didn't some other member say that their dealer was notified that the refreshed C will do away with the floating screen?

The S Class even has floating screens in the rear. It's not a cost issue. Touch TFT screens are dirt cheap vs buttons etc. It does make fitment of optional screen sizes easier in build.

You hit the nail on the head. Every focus group Benz has ever had shows people want buttons or hard controllers. They don't want touch screens full of dirty, greasy finger prints.

Ms. Oona Scheepers, good to her word, is fitting touch screens to VAG group products & getting many complaints about greasy finger prints.

Hated it. Absolutely detested it.

Drove a C300 with it for a week... it converted me, and I very much like it now.

Love it! First time I seen it on press pictures was not sure, but I think that design of it match overall modern design of whole interior. Some says it looks cheap, well for me iPad like design is actually positive thing. And besides that, it is on eye level, not somewhere low in dash, it has good resolution and PQ, has no reflections. Bazel is thick, but if it was smaller well 8.4" will have a size of current 7" so... no that great.

It has grown on me, but a lot of people that get in the car ask why it sticks up like that or does not retract. I'm accustomed to it now, but I do question why it could not be a touch screen and thusly why we could not have CarPlay / Google in the Car
