WiFi speed

Am I doing something wrong? The Mercedes WiFi is hardly
worth using. Searched the forum & found only one reference
back in October. Car recently purchased & got the mBrace subscription.
It is new to this series, correct?

Thanks for any input!

You're talking about the Wifi ability to share your mobile data connection? For me its something I don't use as my iPhone has the same capability.

I believe the speed of the mBrace WIFI it is equal to 3G Cellular Speed. So if you have a Iphone 6+ on the LTE network, the car connection speed will feel very very slow

Thanks! That is my configuration (ATT).
Did MB not incorporate the later hardware or is it the network
provider?

The connect speed for the MB Internet option is painfully slow. Very few of us have found it well implemented enough to keep it after our 3 month trial subscriptions expired.

I gave up on it. Reminded me of dial up.

It is maybe good for email, but that's it. I never tried connecting more than one device, but I bet that it wouldn't be usable at all for more than one user at a time. It is certainly not a "rolling WiFi hotspot, with a secure, high-speed connection.." as claimed by MB.

WiFi speed is pathetic. Speed test clocked it at 0.09 mbps down & 0.32 Mbps up.

With inputs from here, I didn't even bother signing up with MB. Got a iPhone 6 LTE instead.

I agree. Connection speed too slow to make it useful. Called MBrace yesterday to let them know not to extend beyond trial as basically its useless.

yeah, it's 3G from Verizon. It really only comes in handy when you're out in the middle of nowhere. but, this also depends on the cell service you have your phone. I have t-mobile which doesn't have good coverage, so I found it useful when I was on cross-country trips.

Thing is I remember when phones only had 3g and they were still faster than MB apps.

It's useless. It makes no sense that someone at Mercedes approved this. My wife's Audi has LTE.

Is the connection between the phone and the car over Bluetooth or WiFi? can you still connect if you turn off Bluetooth? Wifi is fast normally, Bluetooth is not.

Either. If you have MBrace then your car can be a wifi hotspot, but if you don't then your can tether your phone via Bluetooth to provide data for MB Apps.

Wifi will be slow because its on a 3g data plan but from what I'm hearing its performs even slower than 3g should.

3G is not slow. It may be slower than 4G/LTE, but it's not slow for apps by a long shot. If the car's apps are slow via MBrace, then it's either a problem with the way the system works, or the car's on GSM/EDGE for its data connection.

That's what I think. Maybe MB negotiated a cheap rate from the carriers using Edge.

possibly, or they are throttling the speed of the 3G.

Basically, unless MB can come up with a dramatic improvement of their Internet services and apps, it will remain nothing more than a novelty.

I do find the basic MBrace service to be of some value, and I did sign up for a three year subscription. The only part of the Plus plan I found interesting was the Internet Radio app. That was okay, but it took forever to connect and seems to be in direct competition with Sirius satellite radio ... which is included for 6 months and works just fine. I tried all the other apps and always lost patience waiting for them to initialize. Even if the connect speed was reasonable, I doubt there was much there worth paying for.

When it comes right down to it, how many more distractions do we need when we're driving? How about an app that keeps your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel?

I was just talking to someone at Mercedes and mentioned the slow speed of their Internet services. I'd read this before, but he confirmed that they use relays in Germany for the service. So, the request starts here, goes through either a cell or satellite network to Germany, then comes back here.

The total response time is very slow, and they are very aware of the problem. I have no idea if they intend to improve this in the near future.

Has this improved in the 2017s? I have a 2017 but cannot tell since the performance seems faster than my 2015 (really slow) but not as fast as the LTE speeds that my phone provides.

recently purchased a 2017 AMG GLS and the wifi is horrible. On its own, it is painfully slow, and when switched on while my cellular service is turned on, I am unable to browse on my phone or retrieve email.

first of all, it's not WIFI. wifi is when you use a router or a mobile internet tethering.

what our cars have, is simply a 3g connection provided by verizon.

it's a 128kb/s potential speed. real world would be close to 80~100kb/s. THIS IS PAINFULLY slow for today's internet.

back when phones only had 3g, remember how SIMPLE the mobile websites were. some didn't even have images.

now dial back to 2017 and check the mobile pages, there are tons of images nowadays. Considering that each image these days range from 500kb all the way to infiniti (depending on resolution and format of the image file), a 128kb per second connection does JACK *****.

all mercedes had to do is allow our cars to connect to our phone's 4g LTE connection via WIFI. this way, we would get 1000kb per second EASILY.

but mercedes did not implement this for cars sold in USA. it is available for european mercedes and even canadian mercedes. but not in the united states.

go figure..........
