Wheel Well Material

While washing the car today I noticed the rear wheel well liner had this very porous soft material. I'm sure it must be for sound deadening. The front wheel well has traditional hard plastic. The problem as I see it, is that when this porous material gets mud on it, it will be impossible to clean. Does everyone else have the same thing. It's like they forgot to put the liner in the back.

Seems to be an MB thing. Same on my current W204.

As for cleaning, I use Snow Foam on the rear arches and leave a good while, then blast off with the power hose.
