Why are those of us with bad transmissions being told it is only a software issue

I am pretty confident that this issue can be fixed with a reflash, as I have the same issue in my own car I have talked to a lot of competent people at HQ and I have been told that they are working hard on a fix, every software update need to be thouroghly tested before shipping it out to the dealers and this takes time, initial reports say it will be available early Q3

Same info i got from my dealer in Norway. Early Q3 (immediately after summer as he said).
But always good to get a second independent confirmation. Thanks Vic

Q3 bloody hell. Thanks for the info Vic, I suspect you'll be quite an asset to this forum (and have been already). Have you had any feedback on how best to drive the car if this issue may cause any undue wear or other issues with the drivetrain?
Also have you had any indication internally why this wasn't picked up during development?

Best way to avoid the jerk is to drive with as little load as possible during the 2-3 shift, you learn pretty fast how to avoid it.
This issue wont cause any stress or wear on the transmission

Generally my transmission is quite good.... Small issue I have with it though is the lag between selecting drive when in reverse. When reversing out of a parking spot sometimes there is a need to to quickly put the car in drive and drive off quickly to avoid oncoming traffic, but I find with the w205 that there is a approximate 10 second pause when taking off after selecting drive...... I'm hoping it's a software fix as well.... I also have a Honda CRV and there is no lag between reverse and drive.
Same with everyone else??

I have about a one or two second pause before drive engages coming out of reverse.

Wow I just read both of your 7 page sagas. Seems to me that plain and simple the MB 7G transmission these cars use just plain isn't very good.
From your description of the symptoms the bad shifts felt extremely bad, like being hit from behind.
On my C300 I would characterize a "bad" shift as "a slight but noticeable" jerk. Nowhere near "neck or body jerking" or "like being rear ended". For me it seems to happen on a downshift from 3-2, but also on harder acceleration from 2->3 and 3->4. But again, not all the time and I am not sure it's worth putting in the car for service. At least not yet.

Well so far for me I think of it as a minor issue since the severity of the jerkiness is pretty low. This morning a one hour drive in traffic I only had 2-3 occurrences, the rest of the time the shifting was smooth.
I'm not about to go buy an AMG model to fix it LOL.

The past couple days I started getting a hard knock when shifting from fourth to fifth in comfort mode. I haven't tried any other mode yet. What's odd is, it's fine for the first few minutes after pulling out the garage. Then it starts to shift hard from fourth to fifth. Feels like someone is tapping your rear bumper. Once the engine is warmed up it goes away. Not sure if it's worth a trip to the dealership yet.

So if they come up with a fix I'll take it, but otherwise I'll still enjoy my car

Sadly with my e550's...
The hard shifting was nearly 80% of the time and that ruined the drive experience as I would always anticipate it and have anxiety over it... I started to hate the car
Lol...buying an amg was my ultimate fix but I did get all my money back first

That's exactly what I do LOL. I anticipate it, and stress over it. It's actually pretty embarrassing when your passengers feel it.

So I dropped the car off for the hard knock during fourth to fight gear shift. The first words out of the Service Advisors mouth was: Well it could be a 2 hour download! Since they didn't have any loaners available I had to reschedule for next week.

My Petrol C200 has had this issue since I purchased it. It has been in the local dealership for 5 weeks as I refuse to take it back until it is fixed. They tried installing a whole new transmission and torque convertor but it made no difference. The dealership are convinced that it is a software issue. I remain to be convinced.
17/6/15 Have just had new software installed and car runs like a dream. I understand that the software will soon be available in all MB workshops.

Mercedes benz has no idea what is causing the transmission problems on there cars. If is probably from using cheap parts like they used on the 2014 navigation systems.

Isn't the transmission ultimately the same for all the c classes except AMG cars? Or is the 7G different for all models?
If the transmissions are different then I tend to agree with with the last post above. They might have used other cheaper parts.
But if the transmission is the same for all then this is a software issue.

I'd go with software too as it just seems a bit dumb at shifting. Either rev mismatching or poor clutch control. Mine is either jerky when cold or when under mid level load it sometimes feels like it's closed the clutch before shifting is complete resulting in rev flare before getting into gear. I reckon poor software. Whatever it is, it's a bloody poor show for a car that should be well tested.

I have the exact same problem as ManiacGT describes: "...D2 to D3 change is bad until say after 10 miles or so when the car is warmed up. ....D2 to D3 shifts 'catch' badly to the point it feels like someone dabbed the brakes while shifting making you move in your seat." Have had it in the shop twice and problem still exists.

I just want to update my status: Somewhere around the 1100-1200 mile mark my shifts became very smooth - no more jerkiness at all (although my level of jerkiness was never extreme anyway). I don't know what happened, the only thing that might be a factor is around that time I spent about a week (with my commute of ~45 miles a day) driving in sport mode.
Now, (at ~2000 miles) all my shifts (up, down, doesn't matter what gear) are very smooth, doesn't matter if I'm in Sport or Comfort mode. The problem just went away and it's been like that for the past 800 miles or so.

Can only speak for myself but I had my box reflashed and the shift points reset (so I'm told) it was literally like a new gearbox and so much smoother and quicker at changing. Now, about a month later it is exactly as bad as it was before the software re flash. I do think it is software related, it just seems that the box throws itself out of calibration somehow?
