I'm guessing it is because I got an early production version, but my C450 does not have the 4Matic badge on the rear. Not a big deal - I actually thought it may have been only Euro-spec cars that had the badge...but I guess not.

The letters sit way too high and proud from the paint IMO anyway. I was constantly snagging corners whilst cleaning the car and debadged it soon after. Could have been someone brushing past the car and their clothing caught on it.
Whether it was on purpose or accidental doesn't matter now. If you want to replace it, check out eBay. There's heaps of them there.

This is definitely possible. On my previous vehicle (2011 335xi) I had BMW give it a free wash after service and they managed to snag a corner of the tail light and chipped off about a 1/2in piece . Of course they put the blame on me for the repair afterwards, but it was a valuable lesson nonetheless. Touch-free washes only!

From what I have seen, US C450's do not have the 4matic nameplate.

Debadging
My dealer did it for me without charge. Several other commenters have said that their dealers also did it for them. (In Germany, about 80% of cars of all makes, both expensive and inexpensive, are debadged. It seems to be just a custom. Everybody does it because everybody has always done it.)

Mine fell off with a microfiber cloth snag. The dealer replaced it with no question. Of course they took all the letters off with a Brillo pad and I had to compound an polish around the new letters for an hour to fix it but... I have a c again
