Then if you wander too far off into the woods experimenting, just re-load the old file and start over.

Since you're listening to the system as you monkey with stuff, it's pretty intuitive to see what exactly controls what and how each change affects the system overall. You can also "solo" individual speakers or sets of speakers...the tweeters and mids for instance...and just hear those playing, so you can experiment with some EQ, or whatever, and then un-solo everything and see how the performance changes.

I usually start by soloing mids and highs, getting the harshness out, then soloing the bass and midbass, getting the looseness out and tightening the kick drum sound, then I start holistically tweaking the whole system, using several "reference tracks" that I know really well.

Or email me your config file as an attachment and tell me what's bugging you and I'll send you back the revision. It won't be perfect since I can't hear your car, but it will get you close.
its a bummer it can't be integrated into iTunes.. i.e.: iTunes has its own eq presets. click "custom1" (one made from the app) and you can still use iTunes.
as i understand you have to use the app to listen to music if you want to integrate your custom presets correct?

Right. EQu becomes your music player and preempts any Itunes EQ presets. I usually connect thru BT and use COMAND to control the playback anyway so the music player app doesn't make a difference. Note that on EQu, the track skip function works normally, but not the deeper search by playlist, artist etc. Using those will bring the Apple player back.

There are a lot of moving parts in the car...tone controls, fader, surround sound. It's best to "lock" the car's settings and do your tuning in the app, or you'll be chasing your tail after a while. I'd leave Surround Front on, Fader to midpoint, and all three tone controls to 10. That will give the app the most possible signal to work with.

This was the curve for the Audio 20. That little trough at 4k is key to getting the brassyness out of the mid range.

My best suggestion is under the Audio menu, you can select "Boost" vs. Standard audio levels. Make sure to have your Bluetooth device (iPhone, Samsung, etc.) with at least 1 or two volume bars below the max. That way you won't have any distortion. Once Boost kicks in, you're at at least 50% increase in volume on Bluetooth.

It's pretty thin and brassy. I could get a car with that system sounding as nice as a Burmester car, but I'd have to spend more than the entire P1 package that includes the Burmester.

Audison Prima 8.9, Focal KRS100 4" components in the front door and mirror sail panels, Hertz 4" coaxial in the rear doors, small sub box in the trunk and a custom tune on the Prima would do it.

Also, has anyone else noticed that when controlling the volume with the knob next to the touchpad that the system is VERY finicky in terms of the bass response? For instance you could have a lot of bass at one particular volume, but move the knob one tick down, and the bass drops substantially? Then move it 1 more tick down and the bass is back close to where it was before?

Finally, what are the optimal settings for mid, treble, and bass settings that you guys have found?

Have you tried turning off the auto volume noise adjustment option ?

I have a new S550. I am not thrilled with the sound. I had a 2010 E and the sound was much better. I see in the new S the front speaker on the dash does not run the entire length of the dash, only in front of the driver. The Harman Kardon seemed much stronger. It's good, but not what I would expect for the $$. I might have to enhance it.

I seriously thought it was just me , some days I feel like my stereo is so much louder than other days , usually with my iPhone the volume is far from overwhelming at max volume . I'm starting to think it has to do with my phone because a CD for example can get much louder

Anyone know where the auto volume adjustment is on US models? I thought the dealer would have mentioned something about it by now since I've taken it in 3 times for this issue...

It's not in any of the sound menus. I can't look it up right now, but I think it's in one of the vehicle settings menus. Make sure it is not checked, since it does degrade the sound quality dramatically.

Talking Harmon Kardon vs. Burmester

The last few days, I have been driving an E350 loaner. The Harmon Kardon audio system is inferior to the Burmester system of my C300. I wouldn't call the Harmon Kardon system even good. As Mike5215 wrote about the base W205 system, yhe Harmon Kardon system is thin and brassy. Compared with the Burmester system, it has little sound staging. (The "Surround" setting is On, but it really doesn't matter much, on or off.). If I turn up the bass to symphony orchestra concert hall level, the bass is muddy.

Worse, the bass obviously emanates from the trunk. It's as obvious as cheap LPs at the beginning of stereo era. Record producers would take a mono recording and create the two stereo channels by using tone controls to boost the treble in the left channel and the bass in the right. You know, violins on the left, low strings on the right!. In the E350, it's treble in front, bass in back.

why would it degrade the sound at all, all it should be doing is increasing the volume slider automatically with speed/ambient sound?

I may be misquoting MB on this, but in the user manual it states that using this, diminishes the dynamic range of the system.

I would verify the audio source before troubleshooting the system. If the source is mixed mp3 files on a thumb drive the levels on different tracks could vary quite a bit.

OP needs to establish a control audio source, then use that same control for all testing or troubleshooting of the system.
I know this is an obvious 1st principle thing for all you advanced audiophile guys, but it hasn't been mentioned yet.
