I took my ash tray out a few weeks ago and gave the whole area, including cup holder / cup holder mat, a proper cleaning. Inserted a thin piece of foam matting where the ash tray was...good enough for free, for now.
Surprisingly good amount of space there. I put my sunglasses there, since they don't fit up top.

When installing the rubber mat in place of the ashtray, I discovered that the cup holder also comes out. Since drinks in my Mercedes are as unwelcome as tobacco smoke, I was delighted to recover the additional storage compartment. The image from MASSC450 clearly shows the catch in the center front. The image from Gerrit shows the resulting surprisingly large compartment. It is already finished with its own rubber mat. If you have to whip sunglasses on and off for tunnels, the space is more convenient than the overhead sunglasses holder. It may also support a smartphone or a stand-alone GPS in a convenient position.

I suppose it's my own fault for mentioning why I didn't mind giving up the cup holder. I do not wish to start an off-topic discussion, so I leave to other, more imaginative readers to speculate why an owner might wish to protect leather upholstery from liquids. Here's a hint for those who do not have leather upholstery: coffee with milk spilled into carpet sours in warm weather. It's really hard to get rid of the smell!

BTW, I picked up this little mat from the dealer a couple weeks back. It indeed was part #205 683 01 91. Came to $32 and is probably my favorite "mod" thus far
YA ! i just removed the ashtray cover by forcing / pushing the cover all the way up then i heard a noise. not sure i broke it or what but the cover is off. that' what I wanted. Now it's much easier to reach for the coins .
