Origin of Engine in C300

What's the name of the four in the C300? Is it the same basic engine that was in the W204 C250 with a different turbo and pistons? Or is it something designed from the ground up for the W205?

Yes, the engine is the same as the C250 . It's an M 274 DE 20 AL (read all about it by following the link; sorry it's in German but you can use Chrome to translate)

The code designation is broken down as follows:
M - Otto Motor (i.e. petrol)
274 - Is the production series
DE - Direct Injection
20 - Engine capacity in deciliters (rounded)
A - Exhaust turbo charged
L - Inter cooled

AFAIK it just uses different ECU mapping and boost/fuel pressures to achieve the increased performance over the C250
