A good detailer may still be able to recondition it. It doesn't hurt to try.

Technically leather is dyed, not painted. A dye permeates the material, giving it color throughout. Paint sits on top. You can buy OEM color matched spray dye that resembles spray paint in the way it goes on but it's formulated differently than paint, in the same way stain is formulated differently.
As with stain, when you're re-dying leather you're applying thin coats, letting it soak in and then wiping off the excess before it dries. I've used it in the past to touch up seats, usually the driver's side upper bolster where friction has worn through the color.
To get that little panel to dye evenly you'd use rubbing alcohol to even out the existing color coat first, then dye in thin coats, wiping away excess each time until the panel blended with the surrounding panels.

I owned a first year, Ferrari 308 a few years back. When I purchased it, I wasn't happy with the way the seats looked so I had them redyed. When they were furnished I was less happy with them. The leather seemed more brittle, as if the dye hardened like lacquer. I ended up replacing the skins later that year from Reoriginals. The redye was inexpensive, and a great solution for a flip. I however was keeping it for a longer term investment, and the new interior really boosted the value.
