The latter not being important unless what he was driving before was essentially identical in terms of engine, vehicle weight, transmission, style of driving etc. OP is simply crawling along (4 miles in about 20 minutes averaging only 13 mph) doing what amounts to continuous start and go driving. In that kind of driving environment, most cars with a similar engine, transmission and overall weight would likely only average somewhere in the 12 to 16 mph range. So OP would appear to be right in the mid range of what would be reasonable for the length and type of driving in his commute.

Your example of what is typical NYC stop and go driving in and around Manhattan and some of the other boroughs would produce similar results, if none of your driving included spots like the West Side Highway or other less congested roadways. So I think the only problem OP has with his vehicle is that his perception of what his realistic gas mileage should be while driving such a short distance under such conditions.
Sorry, big derp on my part. Looking at his OP he states 3155 miles and total engine hours running of 143hrs. So avg speed traveled over the life of the car is only 22mph. That definitely explains the low mileage.

Christ if I bought a performance vehicle and had a sub 25mph average speed I'd kill my self. Good think I live inside the city and my office is in a suburb, so I have a daily highway commute (albeit sometimes with flashes of heavy traffic).

50/50 between 19-21 mpg. Great on the gas coming from a 5.0 V8 SUV!

C450, GLS 63 and a few other things
Just finishing the 1500 mile break-in. 90% in Comfort mode, and mostly in city traffic/around town. Seem to be getting 21-23 MPG for each tank. This is compared to the G35 that was around 18 MPG on the same commute. I'm happy.

Yeah the joys of living in Los Angeles and its traffic! I just thought with the stop and go and all the tech on this engine I would be doing at least the same as my Jeep Grand Cherokee with the V8 did.
Now I'm at about 1mpg below that!

Driving around the city with a loaner: 17.7mpg. in C mode.

Have to say that in another (this one pedal to the metal) stroll in Sport+ in a very nice winding road it went up to 16.2mpg.

PD: The car was brand new.

Think of it like this, everytime you stop your engine has to work harder to get you going compared to driving along at 65 MPH in which you are coasting and using momentum to keep the rpm low. In a perfect world there would be a battery system in place to use during stop and go traffic then once the road opens up the engine would come into use.

70% highway of 70MPH... averaging 10.5-11L/100km (21-22MPG). Saw a very significant improvement after 3000 km's, although I'm not sure if it's because of the break-in or the much warmer climate... Probably mix of both... Over a 200 km drive, all highway, I was able to get 8.4L/100 km (28mpg) at about 71 mph (115km/h)...

Unfortunately all that crawling along in stop and go heavily congested city driving, even with all the technology in your vehicle, is not going to result in great gas mileage. You're getting pretty good gas mileage considering your horrible daily commute. A difference of 1 mpg less than your Jeep Grand Cherokee is realistically neglible.

You bought a performance sedan not a Prius. Unfortunately as someone else already pointed out, you're only doing an average of about 22 mph since you've owned the vehicle. So if gas mileage is your chief concern, perhaps an alternate vehicle might be a better choice. However, even if you downsize to a more fuel efficient econo car, the type of driving you're doing probably won't yield you much more than between 21 to 25 mpg.

It seems you don't get to have any opportunity to enjoy driving your vehicle as it was designed to be driven. Not with an average spped of 22 mph since you've owned it. The main purpose of getting any perfomace-type sedan is to occasionally be able to have some fun with it. The inability to do so would bug me far more than getting 1 mpg less than your old vehicle.

Exactly! It's all relative and I'm sure you don't really focus on your gas mileage. You probably focus far more on what a fun ride your vehicle is.

By the way, I get 19 to 20 mpg around town and a bit over 28 mpg on the highway, but so what. I bought the vehicle because I wanted something that would be a bit more fun, but not another temperamental sports car.

Get out on the open road man! Take her down through Mojave or up the PCH. Maybe a few canyon runs out towards Malibu. There are plenty of great roads to play on down there.

It seems like 99% of your driving is short distances in commuter traffic.

I've been getting 21-23mpg combined and I ONLY drive in Sports + since the car had 6 miles on it.

Are you serious!? That's no so bad. Uh, T Money, care to share your special technique, please?

As a lover of Sport + (who isn't), 16-17 might be what I could muster up......at best; possibly lower, and that's pitiful. Might try to track it better tomorrow and report back.

Anyway, T, school us. Mentor us each into your MPG protege'. Please.

So, I go to great lengths to try and break in my cars across a wide rev band rand, different gears at same speed and differing speeds for the first 1500 miles or so - especially on the highway. It's always gotten me above average fuel economy. Maybe it's also the way I drive. Fast, but not stomp and break and stomp and break type of driving.

That said, with 3200 miles on the 2016 C450 AMG I'm getting 23.5 combined. Probably because in and around town I spend more time in S and S+ than anywhere else. It's just more fun that way.

When I am on the highway, I've reset for long drives while on the highway and get between 29-33 mpg with averages of 65-80 mph average. I normally drive between 80-85 on the way to work for the first 32 miles, that's where I'm hitting the 30 mpg. Avg for that journey mph says 80.

Way home, more traffic but still flow, I get 32ish, but the average is only 65 mph.

That's with a bit of up and down hill on the route. I have the feeling that when I do a trip from here to LA soon on the 5, i'll probably see solid 31-32 for the journey with a 75 mph average
