Can anyone hear the steering?
I've just bought a used C220 W205 Sport. It's an early version (September 2014) and a UK spec right hand drive.
Really love the W205 and the only way I could afford one was to get an early version with a bit of mileage (about 30K - just had it's second service). I bought used approved from a Mercedes dealer.
Anyway my story and question...
When I test drove the car the steering was off centre and it occasionally made a sort of squeek noise when turning the wheel. The dealer told me it was just the alignment and needed a rubber grommet or something on the steering rack/shaft and that it would be sorted when the car was ready.
A few days later I picked up the car. But during the hand over I had to sign some warranty paperwork which said the steering shaft was replaced. A bit more major work than I expected.
Anyway the steering is dead centre and the squeek has gone.
But at low speed and during near full lock (I notice it turning into my driveway) I can hear the steering. It's not a bad sound, quite subtle. Sounds like maybe I can hear the shaft or something moving/turning faintly.
If it wasn't for the warranty work I wouldn't even have thought twice about it. So my long winded question is: Is everyones steering completely silent or can you hear anything when at slow speed and near full lock?
You will of course get noise from the tyres when turned and the vehicle is staionary.
Best way to confirm is to have the car up on stands and turn the steering lock to lock..
Noise could come from; Suspension element rubbers / bushes, steering rack, steering column if fouling on surroundings....
I would follow up with the dealer..
I have to say mine is all but silent, i have never heard it above for example tickover...
I would still report it (so that its start date is recorded in case of warranty issue escalates), and request the dealer inspect and confirm, then with something in writing that it is OK... if indeed it is.
Perhaps try another car on their lot for comparisons sake with the Aftersales staff member as a witness...
All the best.
