Opinions on the safety of RaceChip (or Piggyback tunes in general)
I just received the RaceChip ultimate that I bought for my C300 4MATIC a couple of days ago. I kind of ordered it in a rush since they were running a 10% sale which brought it down to around $611. I was curious what your opinions are in terms of the safety of piggyback tunes, or RaceChip to be specific.
I would obviously be removing it before taking it in to the dealership, but I am curious if there are any known issues with such tunes such as engine/transmission damage. I'm still debating if I should go ahead and install it and try it out, or try to sell it/return it. I would be losing about 20% for restocking fees though so I'm not sure. I guess the downside to this chip is that it does not have an easy way to turn it off via smartphone etc... I know the Dinan chip can be tuned through a phone app, which I guess might be more safe if you are just cruising since you can effectively disable it, but as far as I know the RaceChip is always on. Anyways, would love to hear what you think about the tune and if I should go ahead and install it
Thanks!
I would suggest installing it and take it out if you're not happy with it. One thing to take note is that you should pop open your hood, lock the door, and wait 15 mins prior to removing the sensors etc. This is to ensure there is no electrical leak while installing the chip which may cause the Engine light to pop out. However, if this happens, 4 clean start will remove the error.
Lastly, Racechip's latest chip do indeed allows you to control the chip via your smartphone. I believe it's called the Racechip Ultimate Connect.
Keep using the correct fuel(higher RON).. and forget it.
Have had mine on for the last year, adds a decent push lower down above 5k it tails off but thats expected.. little impact to fuel economy.
I can still get 6.5l/100kms on the commute..
Dealerships may well see it but most couldn't care less.
If thee is an issue engine related then of course you have exposure, but these are not disabling the cars own safties so they are relatively lopw risk.
if you are really worried about the latter just drive it stock..
