I am facing a difficult scenario, my C180 Exclusive with 55K on the clock runs out if warrenty and service plan Dec 2020.
How dependable are these motors, since i have to make a difficult choice coming the new year, do i trade it or will it last for the foresable future. No problems up to date, but scared something expensive might go in future.
At present i can still negotiate a good trade but once out of service plan the value will drop considerably.

Everyone has their own opinion about this but the way I look at it: Any car modern car is sophisticated and chocked full of computers, sensors and complex mechanical/electrical systems. I am less concerned about a major engine problem than I am with these costly ancillary systems needing replacement/repair. The C-Class is the highest volume seller from the leading luxury brand in the world. If it was prone to engine failures of any statistically significant percentage it wouldn't be the leading car from the leading brand for decades and you'd be reading a lot more than the handful of threads that exist here with owners screaming to high heaven.
That said, I do not like keeping a modern vehicle very long after the warranty runs out. The days of running to the local parts store when your fuel pump fails and picking one up for $50 and popping it on in an hour are long gone. I prefer the peace of mind of having a warranty that will handle anything that comes up. Were I in your position I'd trade while the warranty and service plan are still in place and increasing your trade value and getting you into something with a warranty.
