Symptoms

My backup camera will not drop down automatically when the car is put into reverse or when instructed to through the head unit.
For some strange reason if the boot/trunk lid is open I get the "check entire surroundings" screen.
I have been able to prise off the lens cover so I can confirm that the camera does work.
With the boot lid closed the "Check entire surroundings" screen does not appear, the current media screen stays in place.
Given the symptoms of my problem, what can I do to fix it?

First you need to get that system properly diagnosed with a good scan. Then you can fix!

Try taking it to the shop and let the pros fix it.

Surely the point of a forum like this is to fix things for yourself, to avoid going to garages. Anyway, things got worse before they got better. Next thing the boot wouldn't open electronically which led me to investigate further. I found 4 broken wires in the loom around the hinge. I've no idea what the other two wires were for, I'm guessing one for the camera and one for the boot but maybe something else wasn't working and I didn't even notice. Anyway everything's fixed without being connected to a laptop.

In all honesty this would have been something extremely difficult to troubleshoot over the internet. Something like broken wires at a flex point, while obvious now, would really only be something one would be able to troubleshoot further with physical access to the vehicle (short of waiting for additional symptoms like you ended up doing).

It's pretty poor that you can snap 4 wires in a wiring loom just with everyday use. I don't know if this was subject to a recall but to have damaged wiring above a fuel tank is surely a fire hazard.

Exactly. Even more reason to take it in and have it handled professionally so it's documented.
