Easy Apple CarPlay/Android Auto wiring mod
First is a relatively easy Apple CarPlay/Android Auto wiring mod.
I didn't order the wireless charging NFC option because I have an iPhone 11 Pro Max and the NFC doesn't work with iPhones and the wireless charging is painfully slow, so the USB connection is in the center console. I like having my phone easily accessible which means putting it in the ashtray/storage in the front of the center console. If you do that, the charging wire pinches between the console opening when closed and runs across the top of your console and over the center controls and you can't close the lid of the ashtray/storage. It's not a clean look and the wire gets in the way.
I embarked on a wiring re-route that would use the center console USB for CarPlay and Android Auto and hide the cord with the least amount of modification to the car. All I did was drill one small hole that is hidden from view.
Step 1
Remove the center console cover:
Step 2
Drill a hole in the front of the small cubby hole in the center console:
Step 3
Remove the ashtray and route the cable through one of the open slots in the bottom:
Step 4
Install cover/pad:
Finished product!
Phone plugged in with data/charging cord and hidden:
Bonus pics, on the Circuit of the Americas Formula 1 track last week after I put it all back together (including my console mod and radar detector hardwire, posts to come):
I hope this helps anyone considering this mod!
I think Walshe25 is right because when the key is in that spot it starts immediately and in any other spot there's a slight delay. I'm assuming there's a sensor under there based on the wiring I saw when I removed the center console.
