DIY maintenance $ savings
Reading many posts about the exorbitant cost of Mercedes dealer service, whether via the purchase of a multi year plan or one off visits, I’d thought I’d share my costs for performing most work DIY, with all remaining work by an Indy shop.
Car: I bought my 2015 4Matic in Nov 2018 with 14K miles. Car now has 62,300 miles.
All service intervals have been by the MB manual — oil/filter changes every 10K miles, air filter & spark plugs at 50K, Transmission fluid/filter at 60K, etc
Only work performed at an independent foreign car specialist has been the first oil change (it was dead of winter and I don’t have a garage), spark plug change (didn’t want the hassle), and transmission fluid/filter change (don’t have an infrared temp reader).
All parts, with exception of cabin air filters and wiper blades, have been OEM, because I have an extended CPO warranty and don’t want any hassles with MB if something goes wrong, I have taken pics of all work, kept all receipts, etc.
Work performed DIY:
5 oil/filter changes (Mobil 1 0W-40)
1 air filter change
3 sets of cabin air filters (Mann)
1 set of wiper blades (Bosch)
Work performed by Indy shop:
1 oil/filter change (labor only)
1 spark plug change (labor only)
1 transmission fluid/filter change (Parts and labor)
I have not included the cost of one set of tires, as the prices can vary greatly due to one’s preference.
Total service costs to date: $1,790
Total mileage to date: 47,900
$/mile: 3.7 cents (remember, does not include a set of tires)
So is a Mercedes expensive to maintain, or is it more a question of how you maintain it?
