New layout speedometer W205

I have noticed the new 2020 model W205 with digital instrument cluster has a larger speed readout.

Does anyone know if this can been done by a firmware update to my 2019 model with smaller speed readout?

Both versions shown in photos.

Thanks in advance.

It might got updated during new gauge cluster/infotainment firmware. There is possibility there might be seperate firmware for 2019 and 2020 but highly doubtful.

On your next visit to benz, ask for new dash firmware. If you don't ask for it, they don't offer new updates for ecu, transmission, radio etc.

I should think they wouldn’t update it just for that reason. Might be worth asking when I next visit, or maybe an independent MB specialist would do it for a fee.

Yours is set to show the distance traveled in the center. The 2020 one is set to show the speed instead of the distance.
What does yours look like when you set it to show the speed? Or is that function not available in yours when you scroll through the different screens since it's already showing the speed at the top?

Mine only shows trip info with a split showing small speed at the top. I don’t have any other option.
Surely the hardware must be the same.

Comand Online have replied to me stating it would be cluster swap to do this. If the hardware is the same it would mean a firmware update.
I will need to find out when I can from Mercedes.

Sorry to say this, but you'll be lucky if they (Mercedes) swapped out your cluster with a newer model for hard $$$. I know everything is the same except for the software, but dealers usually don't do that. They will only install parts that are listed for your car by the VIN number.

As for the firmware update, they won't do that. I know from experience as I tried to get the firmware (software) for the instrument cluster from the European model for my North American MB, same year, same everything except a minor difference in the speedometer increments. They wouldn't do it.

Your best bet would be a Mercedes indy shop. Ask them if they can install the latest software on your cluster. However, when I think about it, they might not be able to do that as they get the latest software based on VIN number. I doubt that they can use Xentry (their coding tool) to download the software for the 2020 cluster when the tool is connected to a 2019 model car. Sorry, I'm just thinking out loud...
Best would be to ask.

You just need to swipe down on the left touchpad on your steering wheel to cycle through the 4-5 different displays you can have in the center. One of them is the larger speed you see in that 2020 pic. My car is currently in the shop, so I can't check, and I use the Supersport layout in my AMG, but I'm pretty sure the Sport and Classic layout have the large speed display for the center. You just have to select it.

Some differences of what you can see in the instrument cluster are related to whether you have COMAND or not. Some of the displays are only available if you have COMAND (Multimedia package).

If it's not available in your current menu then your last resort would be buying an actual 2020 cluster and having an indy shop code it to your car.

Thanks, goof point about the Xentry behaviour not allowing the firmware update. Although an Indy may use another VIN manually to bypass that issue unless they are by the book.

Mine is a RHD so I swipe on the right for the cluster settings. I only have as per photo mileage and trip with small speed reading at top.

Have you tried asking your dealer if they have an update for your dash cluster?

Not yet, asked an indy and they said an update won’t change appearance. Not sure if that is true or not, although I believe in order to update anything they need to use your VIN and the rest is out of their hands. Not sure if there is a way of forcing an update to different firmware if the hardware is the same in my cluster.
everything looks the same apart from that screen with the speed.

Hi berniw99, did you ever get this changed on your display? I have the same model, would be great to have the larger speed readout available.
