C300 Cracked Piston Basics; which dates, VINs, etc are susceptible?

There are a lot of threads on cracked piston occurrences in C300 4 cyl engines but I haven't found any that just provide the basic exposure factors so C300 owners should know if their engine is a risk; i.e., affected model years, manufacture dates, VINs, factory location, etc. Is there such a summary of which C300s are likely to experience the piston failure somewhere?

From my research so far all models before 2019 with the M27x engines are susceptible. I say this because I read someone with a 2018 had the issue. But now I'm wondering if 2019+ (M26x) have this issue. In fact I just made a new thread on that.

Ughh. I thought '17s were clear of the issue but I have an M274 engine.

Thanks for the replies appreciate it. While the C class looks the nicest out of BMW Audi, major engine failure is a joke.

mind boggling that they’ve had this issue for this whole generation and beyond!

and I thought Bmw had poor reliability because you had to replace the coolant system hoses and anti freeze tank like every 150k miles lol.

anyway thanks again, I guess I can live rattle free in the foreseeable future.

Is this only relevant to the US-plant manufactured vehicles?

I operate a specialty shop in Kansas City (Royal Autowerks) and just bought a 2016 C300 with 68K on it from a client with the loss of compression on cylinder #1 and will perform the detailed teardown (and rebuild ultimately). My client has registered for this class action lawsuit. I recommend that anyone that has had the same concern, reach out to the CA law firm that is pursuing the class-action suit.

I am a former Ford engineer and MIT mechanical engineering graduate (Masters and Bachelors) and 39 years as a mechanic. I have engaged the law firm and will likely end up being the engineering and mechanical expert on this case.

I encourage you to get registered for the suit if you have suffered a loss. Do this before you dispose of the vehicle.
