Voice control?

Hello there,
I've bought my first MB recently. I'm still learning it, so please excuse me if this is something abvious I'm asking about.
I thought when I press that voice button on a steering wheel, I would be able to give some basic voice commands to my MB, for example
to call someone. Unfortunately nothing happens, system moves to navigation waiting for instruction.
Does it mean I'm missing some ***tronic system in my car?

Thanks in advance

try a “long hold” until the tones sound, then speak the command

That's generally how it works, but the level of voice control depends on how your car is equipped. MB offers different Infotainment system levels in the various markets, from entry level to the full COMAND system. The full COMAND system has the most capable voice control. In the current model years you can even control cabin functions such as climate control, seating heating etc. via voice control with COMAND.

In general terms and depending on equipment and model year:
  • Single press of the voice control button on the steering wheel activates the car's voice control and you can issue a specific command such as "Call John".
  • Long press of the voice control button on the steering wheel activates your paired phone's voice control (Siri or Google Assistant), so you can issue a voice command directly to your phone. This would be an alternative to make a phone call. You can tell your phone directly to call somebody.
Full COMAND also comes with online services (typically free for the first 3 years), so you can say things like "Navigate to McDonald's" and it searches the map data as well as the online POI database for McDonalds's near you and if found you can start navigation to it. If you don't have the full COMAND system, then the voice control is limited.

It’s very kind of you guys - thanks. Btw visited MB dealer and asked if it’s possible to upgrade my system to command. And they said that can’t be done. A bit strange imho.

cheers
