I own a Mercedes W205 C-class.Whilst driving on a smooth motorway on a clear sunny winters day, all of a sudden with a bang the sunroof exploded showering me with glass. There was no impact. Nothing fell on the glass. I was only 10min away from my destination so continued until I got there. During this time continuous trickles of small glass fell onto me. Fortunately there was a baseball cap in the car which I wore and I was also already wearing a thick jacket. Car was towed to Merdedes. My car is under warranty but they say this is not covered by warranty. My Mercedes garage is stating it’s not a faulty part or faulty fitting and asking me to pay the bill in full! They quoted me a bill in excess of £2,000! They have raised the issue with merdedes U.K. and I am still waiting a response for them. I am hoping for atleast a contribution from merdedes, as it’s clearly not normal for a sunroof to explode spontaneously! But my my garage is pessimistic of a positive response. Interestingly I have also seen similar incidents reported in the USA for merdedes c-class so clearly this issue is not exclusive to me. Have any of you experience this and had a positive response & outcome form Merdedes U.K?
These dealers make me laugh: not faulty fitting or faulty part so it is ok for a sunroof to suddenly explode and shower the driver with pieces of glass. They dont care about the safety of the owner who was very lucky and remained alive. They only care about how to make more money. If this warranty doesn't cover a sunroof which exploded all of a sudden then what it is the purpose of this warranty. There is so something wrong with the glass of this panoramic sunroof otherwise why the hell it exploded? I would call myself MB UK tell them about the dealer's indifferent response and get them to understand that this is not leisure as I was about to die because of a faulty sunroof. I would also contact customer protection and tell them about the incident. You need to elevate the matter my friend and if anyone told you that something must have hit the car tell him NO. You have a good case dont pay 2000 pounds.
i had the same on my bmw E90 years ago. there was too much tension on the glass and the tension was caused because the temperature made the metal frame shrink too much.
since then i never took an other car with panoramic roof
