Steering Wheel Issues

The picture above shows my steering wheel roughly 5 months after I purchased the car as a CPO. I’m not sure why it’s continued to peel, or even began in the first place. Anyone have any ideas why this happened, as well as if there’s a way to fix it, whether that is go to a dealership or DIY?
TIA

Rings on hands? Sun damage? Dirty hands covered with solvent? It looks like material loss and not a coating of yuck. Sorry, there isn't a magical easy answer, but a variety of options if you don't have it covered under a warranty:

No rings or any of that sort on fingers, though the previous owner maybe? I’m wondering if this would be reparable at all. I called my local MB dealership and they said yes, and it would be covered under warranty, but I’m not sure if they were thinking it would be more deep and damaged. Any experience with this? Anything helps.

On a low mileage MB under warranty? No. I'd stop with them replacing it and not worry personally.

On an older VW that was well-loved and not under warranty? Yes. I did a couple of things listed in the website I already shared to mitigate the damage. And even worse one on a Toyota in the 70's I wrapped with tape from an autoparts store.

If your car is only 5 months out of CPO, then you should have a warranty. Ask the dealer to replace it under warranty.

Otherwise, a steering wheel cover OR Aliexpress/Ebay replacement wheel can be found.

Maybe even find someone to replace the material on your current wheel at cost?

I always clean and wipe down my steering wheel when I wash my car.
