Cost to replace rear wheel bearing - C300 4Matic

Service advisor just let me know that one of the rear wheel bearings on my 2016 C300 4Matic needs to be replaced. I was quoted about $1,800. I know that it's a lot more work and more expensive for the 4matic models than a 2WD, but I want to check is this the normal price nowadays?

That's a crazy amount of money to replace a wheel bearing, but unfortunately on par for a MB dealer.

If you like having money, I strongly suggest you go to an independent mechanic (preferably one that's familiar with MB/Euro imports).

And being RWD/AWD shouldn't be any difference in cost, they both have rear axles.

To add some perspective, I had a front-left CV axle go bad on my C300 4Matic and a MB dealer quoted ~$2100 to replace it. I got it done at a Indy shop for $350. It axled just as good for $350 as it would have for $2100.

Good luck!

How did this come to the service advisor's attention? Was it the result of an inspection or "check"? Or did you give specific instructions, based on symptoms you experienced, for him/her to investigate the rear wheel bearing?

Why this, why now?
