Steering wheel lock
I'm trying to work on my brakes, replacing pads, rotors on my 2017 C43 AMG. For better access to 21mm bolts holding calipers on, I have the front of the car on jack stands, start the car, turn the steering wheel all the way to one side, and turn the car off. Steering wheel then centers itself! I assume from hydraulic pressure and not a motor. How do I make the column lock work??

Haven't had to do anything to the C43 where I would have done that, but I do remember that (when on the hoist) the C63 S would not hold a full wheel-turn/lock but would always "unravel" a half turn of the wheel, or so. I solved the issue with an appropriately long stick "wedged in" to hold the steering wheel's cross-spoke in place (with the steering wheel end covered in a protective rag, so as not to damage the alcantara/hardware). In my case, I was turning the steering wheel without starting the engine.

I ended up getting the caliper bolts out and back in with the steering only very slightly turned. Kind of a PITA, but I still got it done. It's weird. The steering pushes back to near on-center with some force. I can hold the steering wheel in place, but it takes some effort!
