High speed whine/hum

Hi guys,

Recently went to Germany and experienced the autobahn and for the first time ever really stretched the legs of my 220d.

Everything was going well until I got to around 125-130mph the car started making a loud whine/droning sound almost like a pad was rubbing on the disk but louder inside the cab. Slowed down to 110-120 it went away? Crept back upto 125-130 and it comes back...

not sure it was wind noise because it didn't sound alot like wind noise...

Whining on the highway is usually the tires. Are the tires rated for that speed, is the tire pressure set appropriately for that speed?

Okay so the actual tires might not be the issue, what are the pressures inflated?

Apologies for the delay in my reply.

I've taken a video of the noise. Doesn't sound tyre related?

Certainly sounds like the brakes, check the calipers and the brake pistons, all good?

Had the disks and pads changed last week again by the dealer i purchased it from. Wonder if the caliper is binding, its now going back there on Saturday for another look.

Possibly, good idea to bring it back to the dealership, it is pretty common for mistakes now installing the backing plate wrong for instance.

Had everything checked that they could physically check bearings are all fine brakes are fine.

The garage is stumped. which doesnt help me at all I'd say is it possible its wind noise? But it sounds more like metal whine so I'm not sure where to go from here.

I mean if it started happening after they did the brakes clearly they did something wrong.

I would also go at the brakes but test if you swivel/Drive linke drunk in an S line if while braking the noise changes then it is in the front....

Do you drive with the paddle shift once in a while? Maybe test lower gear while driving slow

Maybe if you only drive slower the engine spinning (rounds per minute) where always low for you, 7G Gearbox or 9G Gearbox keep the revs very low for fuel savings

If the belt slips or the Tensionen is weak it will whine it high revs, 100km/h+ on modern Mercedes with 7G if you only drive in town :-)

The noise is coming from the roof liner.

Did a road test with a friend who was covering vents and things whilst the noise was present.

Low and behold he pushed up on the roof liner on the passenger side and the noise stopped. Let go and it comes back. As you can see from the video the pitch of the noise the roof liner is the last place I expected it to come from. But now the question is why is the roof liner causing what I'm now guessing is a wind noise?

Glad to hear it was a simple fix, I wonder why it started happening after the brake work?

I don't know what to do to fix it or find the source. I can't just shove the roof liner up because it will bend/break it. May need to investigate further it could be anything... windscreen incorrectly fitted or anything

Hopefully you find it, at least now you know the general area of where it is coming from.
