I was considering renewing my c-class to get Android Auto but thought I could retrofit it instead and save the expense. After a lot of research, I successfully retrofitted my head unit in my 2015 W205 to provide Android Auto / CarPlay. The process does not require Chinese gadgets to be installed to emulate Android Auto / CarPlay, only Mercedes OEM parts were used.
I found many different threads that describes some of the process but nothing from start to finish. Anyhow, I documented the complete process just in case someone else finds it useful. PDF document attached.
