Angry Friendly Warning - Please check your front driveshaft U joints on your aging car

My CPO 2015 C300 just hit 100K miles, is out of warranty and finally paid off.

In January (2026) the dealer inspected my car and found that my front drive (prop) shaft had a rattle and the U joint was starting to wear.

The loose U joint was impacting the 4 bolts keeping it attached to the differential. Also, my pinion seal had a small leak. (another story)

At the time I didn't feel the sense of urgency on these repairs.

I kept driving for months until a noise started and I also felt a huge looseness whenever I switched to reverse (or drive), when the parking brake disengaged and the drive shaft started turning.

Lucking I pulled out my Amazon endoscope and took a look via the engine bay. My prop shaft U joint was on the last strip of metal and all 4 bolts had been worn down.

There was a half inch of play (whenever I reversed or moved forward) before the shaft would contact any metal.

I GOT LUCKY!! Had it towed to the dealer ASAP.

I strongly urge everyone with older W205s (or W204s) to inspect your front drive shaft U joints ASAP.

If it breaks while driving the damage to the surrounding parts could total 10k or more.

After researching this further, it appears to be a very common problem with these cars. MB design?

You can do the inspection yourself with an Amazon endoscope:

Sample:

...or ask jiffy lube to raise your car or raise it yourself (safely at home) .....or have the dealer do it.

SAVE YOURSELF THE MONEY, HEADACHE and DAMAGE. Inspect it NOW!

One other thing, a new W205 front drive shaft is less than $100 online, but for some odd reason it's $1070 at the dealer.

So, you really get the shaft at the dealer. LOLOL!
