C63 to go 4 Cylinder in 2021 (W206)

Just read that there are plans that the C63 and C63s will feature a 4 cylinder hybrid starting 2021 in the next gen C-Class (W206).
C63 with 476 HP and over 500 in S trim. AMG build engine 48V hybrid).

This would be a pretty radical change if this is happening

Hybrid is a given. Tobias Moers, CEO of AMG has already said as much last year. The V8 era is done for sure. If you want one, the 205 is your last chance. 4 cylinder hybrid seems a bit extreme, though, and I would certainly be interested in your source. A 6 cylinder hybrid is much more likely. The 43 may go 4 cylinder hybrid as a result.

Specifically 63 &63s models. I don’t think that a C180 make 500+hp

Hybrids are coming and AMG has confirmed that this will be across their lineup.

I guess we have to wait and see if this information gets reported by other sources with a bit more certainty. This guy doesn't even know if it's gonna be 48V mild hybrid or possibly full fledged PHEV. I guess if they are planning to put a decent battery in there for some real electric range, then a 4 cylinder might not be out of the realm of possibilities to keep the weight down. Gonna be interesting I think. AMG is probably most likely to pull off an exciting PHEV performance car with a 4 cylinder in this segment. Ford has built a race car based on their Ecoboost engine, so why not. All the regulations that are currently raining down in Europe regarding noise, particle dust etc. would support this approach, especially if the car has some decent electric range so it could be driven on battery in the inner cities.

It's already been stated and fairly solid hybrid is a given for the 206 series AMG's as pointed out already however more likely a PHEV set up with the new IL6, the V8 is definitely gone for the C Class in future.

It would suck to lose the V8 but if they can figure out a way to move weight toward the rear, it could be a big boon there, especially if the car stays RWD. Since the car is always going to be based on the regular C-class, we're not likely to get a transaxle as that would compromise cargo space (and quite frankly, one thing I like about the C63 is how practical it is). I came from a 981S that had more than enough rear grip to the C63S and it can be a handful sometimes.

Hybrid/PHEV is obviously not the news. That much has been publicly stated but using a 4 cyclinder engine for a 63 level car was interesting. While lacking specifics, the site in the past has provided good early inside info.
I’ll be interested how this develops...

Here is the google translate:

Now, the first Erlkönig shots of the testing of the new C-Class (W206) have emerged.
It is set on a further developed rear-wheel drive platform. New is autonomous driving to Level 3 (debut in the new S-Class V223 May 2020) and the use of MBUX. The delivery starts from March 2021.
While the current in contrast to the competitors still a V8 of AMG is used in the C 63, should be used in the W206, from March 2021 from the tape, only 4-cylinder. Presumably, all engines will have a 48 volt mild hybrid system. This will then also apply to the OM654 diesel.
But AMG does not have a 6-cylinder one-man-one engine. The M256, which is used in the 53er entry-performance models, will be built by Mercedes in Stuttgart Untertürkheim and will also be used in the S 500. He is slightly sportier applied in the 53er models, but does just as much as the production version (435 + 22 hp).
As a result, AMG will build the new C 63 AMG on a proprietary 4-cylinder in 2021. While in the new A 45 AMG in the S-variant 422 hp are produced, the 4-cylinder in the C 63 AMG 476 hp and provide in the S version easily over 500 hp. Whether it is a mild hybrid with 48 volts or a real high-voltage plug-in hybrid device is not clear.

In general, the plug-in hybrid battery with higher energy density will be better integrated in the new C-Class and will enable an electric range of around 100 km.

Glad I jumped in at the right time. The biggest draw of the C63 for me by far was the V8 and the sound.

If the W206 gets a 6-cylinder or a 4, sorry I'm out. Here's to hoping the bigger models will keep the V8.

+ 1

Agree and have stated it before, the 205 series post mid life update AMG range is the best V8 C Class ever and also the last it's the one to have if you love the combination of the 205 shape and V8 engine,

The bigger models are definitely retaining the V8 and even going proper hi po PHEV in the S and GT Classes.

It's no secret the 73 nameplate has emerged for these.

I'd make sense running a smaller engine in the new C63, particularly when considering MB had to make significant modifications to the W205 chassis just to get the M177 engine to fit. If they could make similar (if not better) performance from a smaller engine package without the need for all the chassis changes, it'd be a pretty easy decision to make from their end.

Also, when it comes to the whole V8 issue, I look at it no differently than what all the pickup truck guys have been going through the last few years trying to accept the Ford EcoBoost V6 and the new Silverado inline-4. That "I have to get the V8" and/or "I miss that V8 sound" is so ingrained into the typical buyers that it's hard to shake from their perspective.

If this news is true, Mercedes would loose a lot of sales to BMW because the new M4 is not going to be a four cylinder for sure. If this is the case, I need to upgrade to the last version of the W205. I was actually waiting to see what mercedes comes up with for the w206. I initially heard that it would be an inline 6 for the w206, which can technically be made to sound really good (AMG would be up to it for sure), in that case, I would have passed on the W205 and waited for the W206.

I am so confused.

No V8, No care.

4 banger in a 63 AMG would be an abomination.

Agree with what everyone else has already said. The day the C63 has less cylinders than an M3 is the day AMG dies. If they go down the inline-4 route and this thing still ends up weighing more than a M3 with an inline-6, that'll be an embarrassment.

I always felt like AMG is not ignorant to what their customer base wants from them. I still hope that they wont disappoint.

I got my C63S specifically because I was satisfied with my CLA45's general performance, but the sound and fury of a V8 can't be denied.

But to be fair.. I will prob never buy another ICE car again, voluntarily. So 4cyl/6/8/12 won't matter to me.

Realistically they (and all other manufacturers) have no choice as they have to abide to emissions rules, whether it's the 206 or the model after that one or the one after that one, ICE of all types will be completely replaced all together it's only a matter of time.

As far as I can tell there are no other reports of this v4 hybrid engine, not saying its not accurate but I wouldn't put too much into this news at this point

If they actually do put a v4 it would have to be some serious F1 tech in there to keep the customer base interested. I personally think we will see a inline 6 hybrid.

I don't doubt that AMG with the right technology could make something exciting. Chances are, though, that the bean counters and the need to make it reliable for the streets will somewhat ruin it. I'm just very cynical about where it's all going. ICE cars continue to be neutered, and we are all supposed to transition to EVs powered by renewable energy, but nobody wants new power lines in their backyard to get all this renewable energy from the places where it can realistically be generated to the places where the billion EVs need to be charged, or turns out the wind generators are killing large birds at an unprecedented rate, or large scale solar farms need massive amounts of land to be cleared of all wildlife, and nobody wants to admit that we need to continue to burn natural gas and coal to make up for the times when the sun don't shine and the wind don't blow, and nuclear, the most dense emissions free energy source at the moment is a no-go. Germany for example, who is arguably the leader in this transition is now faced with having to build a new coal plant and destroying one of their historic forests. Their decision to get out of nuclear and go wind and solar has actually resulted in increased CO2 emissions due to natural gas and coal plants having to step up their production. It's always the unintended consequences. There seems to be an easier way to reduce CO2 emissions from cars... don't drive as much. If we all would cut our driving in half for example, we could cut the CO2 emissions in half. How about we stop requiring everybody to travel to a central location to do their jobs, and foster telecommuting instead. It would solve the traffic problems, too. The countries where this is all feasible are Norway, Iceland and similar countries that have a geographic advantage for hydro and geothermal energy sources.

Yes, I suppose we can digress on this topic to no end...

Hopefully fuel won't run out for the life term of current generations and irrespective of the EV outcome, we'll have ICE vehicles to enjoy
