Mercedes dealer vs private garage to replace timing chain?

I have a 2014 C class, 2L petrol

It needs a new timing chain. Mercedes quoted me £3k to do the work, and a private garage quoted me £2k. I told Mercedes I would take it elsewhere and they told me that only they should be trusted to do this work as you need a special proprietary tool to lock the engine before the work can be done, which only they have access to. Can anyone advise on whether this is true, or which option I should take??

The car is only worth about £11-12k now, so spending £3k on it seems like something I want to consider carefully before doing.

Thanks!

Hello, you've posted in the wrong sub forum. You might get a more detailed response in the correct location with other similar users in your scenario.

I'd ask the independent garage how they intend to carry out the work. If you're in the UK or EU I think it's unlikely Mercedes can prevent independent garages from purchasing tools.
