Software Update Connection
Weird issue, wondering if anyone has experienced something similar. I see that some members have been updated to 3.3 so I thought I'd check my software update settings within MBUX. When I open up my data connections, I see that I can enable "use for software update" on some of the connections (my home wifi, my mobile phone). Here is where it gets weird.. If for example, enable software updates using my. home internet, when I go back to connect to my home wifi, it's greyed out. I can choose my cellular connection but that doesn't have software update enabled. If I then disconnect my mobile, it will have the software update checkbox available. I can then enable it and now it will let me connect to my home wifi (no option for software update showing), and now the mobile connection is greyed out and has the software update option enabled.
If I go into the actual software update screen and open the settings (gear icon), it allows me to choose which connection I'd like to use for software updates. I choose my home network, it says connecting and then successfully connected. I go back to internet connections in the settings menu and it shows my home network but greyed out and unable to be selected for connection. If I click on it, it says "function unavailable".
So long story short, I can successfully connect the car to my home wireless and my mobile tethered data, but if I try to enable either of those connections to be used for software updates, they're no longer available for connection. I'm wondering if this is why I'm not getting the most recent software update. I've also reset MBUX a few times by holding down the power button until it restarts, but still no luck.
Anyone else have this issue?
Thanks,
Scott

Having said all this, you don't need a tether for software updates. They get downloaded over the car's LTE connection, assuming you have an active Mercedes me connect subscription. Although, I think the software updates are free and don't require a paid subscription. It's part of the essential services like vehicle status and remote diagnostics that don't need a paid subscription. For example I let my Mercedes me connect subscription expire last September, but I still get the vehicle status in the app, and my car called home the other day because it's due for its annual service tomorrow, so I got an automated email from my dealership in response to schedule a service appointment. I had already done that and the app now shows my upcoming appointment on the service screen. This is new. I haven't seen this last year. The app seems to know now when you have an upcoming appointment and shows that instead of the next service due date/mileage, and none of this requires a paid subscription. The only updates that require a paid subscription are the map updates.
Tethering is an option to download the updates if you don't have a strong enough cellular signal. It might also download the update in the background over your home Wi-Fi while the car is parked at home instead of waiting until you are out driving and downloading it over the LTE connection, but I'm not a 100% certain about this. My 2019 pauses any updates when the car is turned off and then resumes them when it's back on.
Also, keep in mind that as far as the OTA updates go, they get pushed out staggered, so that not all vehicles try to download them at the same time and overwhelm their servers. If an update isn't showing up for you yet, then it may simply mean that it isn't your VINs turn yet.
