Tire replacement question on a 2023 C300 4matic
Tire replacement question on a 2023 C300 4matic
So I have a 2023 C300 4matic, and every site I go on to search for tires tells me that the front and rear tires are different sizes: 225/45R18 for the front and 245/40R18 for the rear. Do you need to keep the same setup or can I just get the same size for all 4 tires? I want to get 225/45R18 because pot holes are an issue where I live and drive with lots of stop and go traffic so I want something offering better fuel economy.
Any insight would be appreciated.

That's called a staggered setup and has to do with how the driving torque is distributed. Even though your car is 4MATIC, it drives the rear wheels more than the front wheels. That's why they are wider to give them a larger contact patch. Your suspension is set up to account for this. If you put skinnier tires on the rear, you change the handling of the car. Because the ratio of contact patch between front and rear will change, your car will tend to oversteer more with skinnier tires in the rear, because the front tires will suddenly have more relative grip to the rear tires. You can absolutely do it, but it will change how your car drives. Also keep in mind, its not just that the tires are wider in the rear, the wheels are as well, so you can only go as narrow as the wheel itself supports before you first need to put a skinnier wheel on the rear that accommodates the skinnier tire. I don't have the sizes handy for the C300, so you gonna have to look at the specs of both the car and tires. The tire specs will tell you the range of wheel width that is required for the width of the tire.

since my front tires are the ones that really need to be replaced, I guess I could have them put the ones in the rear upfront and then get brand new tires that are larger for the back

Looks like someone already had the same idea, but put wider tires in the front instead. That's an odd choice, so yeah, I'd probably restore it back to stock sizes.
