Hideous! WHAT THE HELL is wrong with M-B? First the new E-Class has a indistinguishable rear from a Camry, Hyundai, etc. and now they completely RIP off the new Maxima with that CLS rear? The designers just aren't the way they used to be. Hopefully the real car doesn't look like these spy photo's.

I never believed in the term "grow on you". If it's a good design, you'll love it right away, if it grows on you, you just have accepted it due to having no real choice, not caring enough to keep true with your initial feeling, or just force yourself subconsciously, etc.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the upward line coming from the door to the fender. It looks awful, why upwards? It reminds me (identical almost actually) of the awkwardly upward line that appeared on the 99-04 Mustangs.
It's a baby step improvement from the prervious MYs including the so called upgraded electronics. MB is never on the forefront of consumer electronic impletmentation. The upgraded interior is at least 1 year behind what is in the competition.
The word on the street is the 011 will further the redesign of the interior and exterior. Let's hope for that. In the meantime, it is what it is.

The CLS is the best bet.

IMO..the new Jag XJ might win me over as a new customer...esp. if the CLS 2011 is going to look like that.

Next gen XJ has an interior elegance unparalleled by anything right now, especially M-B with their colder, harder approach of late, with new models.

At the L.A Auto Show only two interiors truly impressed me, the XJ's, and the XF's.

They have hardened the smooth lines which make the car so attractive, same with the E class IMO. The smooth contour gives the car a distinctive European attractiveness.

I suppose everyone will get used to it. Still, when I see the new E, sometimes I think it's OK, and sometimes I think it just doesn't look "European" enough, if that makes any sense.

Agreed about the Euro thing. That's a big issue I have with new M-B's, they don't look "Euro" to me, or Euro influenced. My 211 is parked next to a GLK a lot, and the GLK looks like a Ford/Toyota, etc. same lines, and boxy-cartoon-y demeaner, same goes for the new E, and C, etc.. My E and the CLS parked on the other side of the GLK just out-class, and "out-Euro" the new design language by M-B by a lot IMO.

Anyone been in a W212? be afraid!

The new interiors are absolutely awful, I think they are seriously heading in the wrong direction. The new C has enough plastic and rubbermaid to pass as a low end asian car. The new 212E is awful, I held judgement until I saw it in person, and I still hate it, and it did look like just like all the spy photos said it would. Its hideous, and guess who I overheard saying "man, mercedes is finally making modern looking cars." A Lexus owner.

As another note, on worldcarfans they ave a picture of the CLS spy cars new interior guess what. Its the same interior as the W212. Rubber maid everywhere, that goregous gigantic slab of wood....gone.

I can tell they have ruined the CLS..... Now I can pull the trigger on a 06 55 with confidence.

Reminiscent of the E Coupe.
Honestly, it feels like did the design team who made the E Coupe also made the CLS and they had a different design team make the E sedan.

Definitely agreed. The W204 has a horrid interior. I've had quite a few Loaners, and I'm embarrassed for the brand in how cheap it is. I've had people get in the car say "is this really a "Mercedes"?

The W212's of course isn't as bad, but the quality of the plastics (feel cheap and hard), overall attention to detail in terms of overall refinement and materials (or lack of, compared to older models), etc. have it as an upset to me as well.

Unfortunately, most people don't pay attention to these things, and will buy a Benz for the Star, so M-B will keep cheapening the interiors, while of course adding bigger slabs of wood to "ooh" and "ahh" those who aren't truly paying attention.

Andy, Full Throttle and KA are on point. +1

The new E interior looks and feels cheap. The seats don't even feel the same, the leather felt kind of "rubbery" for lack of a better word. My 98 E Class seats feel of better quality. When I really got to look at it and play with the car, I really couldn't place my finger on it exactly at the time.

If the new CLS shares this fate of interiors, that is FAIL. I really will have to look into a 09-10 later down the road when I re-up on a CLS.

My sentiments exactly.

The seats on the new E's are completely rubbery, just like the W204. Try taking a 600 mile round trip in a W204, you feel like everything inside is "sticking" to you, just very rubber-y, hard, cheap materials, and the dash attracts a lot of dirt. The W212 used much of those same materials unfortunately.

Cool thing about my E is, although the overall interior is M-B Tex, the front seat inserts are genuine Leather, so you're sitting on the nice stuff, at least M-B could have kept that for their $50K+ E-Class line, so you're not sitting on the rubbery stuff.

They really better keep the CLS's interior on point, but with the way things are going I doubt it. The only saving grace is the W221's great interior and perfect materials. The current CLS has a very fancy and elegant interior, I'd hate to see the new "cold/austere" approach brought in.

Well said, the current CLS was a stepup to show some elegance and quality. The mineral glass over the bezels and how nicely things flowed...no offense to anyone but lately Audi seems to have the better of the big 3 German companies concerning interior, Audi, BMW and then sadly MB. I expected better from the 3 pointed star but then again as stated, some people just get it for the 3 pointed star and would overlook hard leather, plastic everywhere and other tidbits that is unacceptable to justify the MSRP.

That looks like a mash-up of the current and some elements we've been able to see from the upcoming.

The shape of the car will be great, I don't think that's up for debate. In fact, I think the overall silhouette will be better than the current CLS, as I believe they are making the windows a smidge bigger (IMO they're too small on the current CLS), however it's the lines, and (angular) shapes and details that have me worried. We'll see. The front end and grille looks straight up E-Coupe. Which to me, is NOT a good thing, I hope M-B doesn't make the CLS's look as "goofy" as that one. I'm sure they won't, it will probably have a slightly more serious face.

I'm waiting to see a production version before I begin complaining. I dig the current CLS body style so it'll take something special to top it.
