To my 305+ members - Quick question - -
While I want to get the widest (or aggressively wider) tires I can, most of what I'm reading (after searching) are all of you with 20s.
I'm stuck with my 19s, OE spec, 19x8.5 fronts and 19x9.5 rears.
For those of you who knows tires well, what would be the recommended beefiest tires I'm able to fit properly?

If your staying with a 19 on a 9.5, you can do a 285/30 or a 295/30.
But if you're going 20x10, 10.5, 11, 11.5 or 12 you can go with the following....

Tire size Rim width
305/25/20 10.5 or 11
315/25/20 11, 11.5
325/25/20 11.5, 12, 12.5

Thanks! Great data to reference. I’m currently at 285/30.

I’m in CA so 285 are easier to come by for all season tires.
thanks again!

There were a few guys running 9.5's on here, actually there was a guy running 10's on the front. Depends on your offset and tire size...

305s on 4Matic

I have a 2014 CLS 63S with AWD and was told by tire salesman that going larger to 305s on the back and keeping 255s up front could mess with the transmission. Anyone here have a problem with this? TIA

but yours isnt AWD, right?

@nicob333 ....i dont know what the tolerances are on the differentials but you're changing the diameter in the rear +12mm. not sure if that will cause an issue or not. maybe you can go with a 265 up front (+7mm) that could get it a bit closer to the safety margin. you just dont want to make the difference in wheel speeds, front vs rear, too significant.

yeah...when he said 'transmission', the salesman was probably talking about the differentials. not sure if he/she was correct, but i've heard of it happening with Gallardos and Aventadors. but i think that had more to do with their center diffs...which im not even sure the 4Matic has.

Thanks for the reply. The front 255s are still new tires and did not need to change them, but it looks like I may need to if I go with the 305 rears. What combo tires do you run and do you have AWD?

I've got 305's in the rear and stock size on the front on a 14 cls63s with no issues after 15k miles. I'm going wider up front here in a bit just for traction issues but I haven't noticed any problems with it so far. Had brand new tires in front is only reason I didn't go wider to begin with, though. If money was no issue I'd try to keep the stock difference in tire sizes in place just for peace of mind.

Thanks for the reply. You mentioned "traction issues". What do you mean? Is this while cornering or with acceleration? TIA

Acceleration. On hard launches, especially on colder streets, it'll spin pretty good still. Obviously not an issue on a track, but definitely one on the street. It's nice being able to run true street tires that are quiet and have no issues with rain and still hook and run 10's on the street. This one will be there with the next set of tires. Going to a 285 up front and a 325 in the rear with invos.

I'd love to see that. I was gonna go with a 325/25 on a 11, but a friend of mine did it first and it didn't look as wide as I expected. Probably need a 12 wide rim to get the look I was looking for, but I have a 315/25 on a 11... Looks ok...

I had 255/30/20 front and 305/25/20 rear on my 2014 CLS 550 4Matic and no issues at all. It’s the same diameter as stock and what RENNtech puts on their CLSs. The tire guy you spoke with doesn’t know his stuff. Here’s what mine looked like;

Can't speak for the all wheel drive, but I've never heard the w218 or the w219 having trans issues due to wider rear tires. Some guys are running 325/25 in the rear for years with zero issue. Not sure how wide your rear rim is, but if it's not at least a 11, don't try a 325, stick with a 305 or 295...
