Cup Holders

Just sat in the CLS for the second time. This time it was a CLS 55 AMG. I like it except for the cup holder. While I think it can hold my sodas fine, I think it would get in the way of my arm holding the gear shift. I like driving with 1 hand on the steering wheel and 1 hand of the gear shift. I guess its like a habit when I had a stick shift.
Can anybody tell me if they have this problem where they can't put a soda and hold the gear shift confortably at the same time?

Why would you hold on the the gear shifter? Did you have trouble with any of your manual cars needing syncros being replaced?

Two hands on the wheel most of the time unless I am getting my lean on. The cup holders do not get in the way for me at all when down.

Enjoy!

Any drink container will get in your way if it's put in the driver's side cup holder; however, it won't if you put it in the passanger side cup holder. In general, there is really no need to pop up the holder. Not really a big deal.

No problem for me and I also like to keep my hand on the gear shift.

Are you saying that you can keep a can of soda without putting up the cup holder. I know with 2 cans of soda, we can't hold the gear shift confortably. But according to these posts, are you guys saying we can keep 1 can of soda on the passenger side with the cup holder DOWN. I know with the cup holder up, it gets in the way of holding the gear shift.

I think mercedes is gently suggesting you not drink soda in the cls 55 amg. Food for thought.

I believe that in Europe the cupholder can be deleted and converted to a storage bin. Does anyone have a part number

I hate the cupholder in the USDM CLS. Its just stupid looking, cupholders are supposed to be retractable or have a door. I cant think of another car with such a setup. The placement especially is retarded. It may not be a stick, but it still gets in the way. I wish they had left it as it is in Europe. Dummies.

The reason they have the cupholders designed like this in the American CLS' is because Americans have been complaining about the MB foldout cupholders for years. These complaints lead to lower JD Power ranking etc, etc, so this is their way of solving the problem

SL-500 (mine), Ferrari Spider convertible (was Husbands, mine now!)
I agree about the american complaints.
First, there were no cupholders, we complained (rightfully so!)
Next, there were cupholders and people called them over-designed (true)
Now, there are cupholders, simply designed and we are still not happy.
Does anyone have suggestions where and how they should be and how they should be designed (especially so my chamagne does not spill when glass is full :p )

Can't please everyone...if you're buying this car based on the design of the cupholders, you should probably consider a Jetta...seriously, this is about the best designed car on the road and people STILL find reason to find fault.

When you live in So Cal and do as much driving in traffic as much as I do, you would undertand why cup holders make driving a bit more satisfying.
The best cup holders were in my Lexus GS400. 2 cup holders on the right side of the gear shift. A simple cover over then when you don't use them. Nothing fancy, just plain works and out of the way when driving but easy to grab a quick drink. They just redesigned the GS and no change to the cup holders.

I have to agree with you AMGB. We just bought new '06 Lexus GS and I owned the previous model as well. Simple, convenient and effective is how I would describe the cup holder. Although I also really like the more complicated fold out cup holder in my E55, wish it were the same on the CLS.

Exhausting...I'm also not 100% satisfied with the vanity mirrors, but don't think I'll start a thread to discuss the issue.
