CLS55 or CLS63 ?

Lease on my Lexus SC430 matures in July. Since I now have two little girls, I want a four door to replace it and the CLS is the only currently available vehicle of that type I like. I love the Aston Rapide concept recently shown but at about $250K it will be out of my price range, plus it is at least 1-2 years away.

So should I order a CLS55 now, maybe with 030, with delivery probably in the spring ? Are USA dealers still taking orders for the CLS55 at this point ?

Or should I wait a bit and place an order for the CLS63 ? I don't expect there to be much price difference, even though the CLS55 engine is probably the more costly powerplant for AMG to produce.

I don't expect to use the car on the track, but it will see some fun on highways and open roads in Arizona. Based on the engine specs I've seen the SC 5.5L has quite a bit more low end torque and better power at lower engine speeds. The NA 6.2L has more availabe HP but I doubt I'd ever be in a situation to take advantage of it. Of course there is 7sp versus 5sp transmission which may make torque and HP comparisons meaningless.

From what I've seen and read, there won't be any other major changes between the CLS55 and CLS63, beyond engine and transmission.

I am waiting for the CLS63 and have had a deposit on it for 18 months !!

I had a 2004 E55 ...why would I go with the same power plant.?...the 6.3 is the first all AMG built engine....there is not much torque difference between the CLS63 and the 55...especially when considering the higher Revs. of the 6.3...Regardless the 6.3 has more torque than the new M5. The new 63 engine has 465 ft-pound.@ 5200rpm ..that is not too far from the 520 of the 55 engine....More importantly...the new M5 has only 383 ...(I drove the new M5 and it still feels fast and responsive regardless)...

Why would AMG take a step back.......Honestly, this is probably an all around better engine than the 55....I am just hoping that the 030 performance package will be available right away or may be it will be part of the standard car.....If you don't mind the uncertainty of when it is coming out (which is killing me by now !) then wait for the 6.3...My guess is 3rd or 4thQtr. 2006

for highways i would take the 55, torque, torque and more torque, plus its easy and "cheap" to get lotsa power out of it.

63 for twisty stuff and track work (eventhough its no track car), personally i prefer n/a engines

Cannot order the CLS55 anymore in the USA - only CLS63 as far as I can tell

regarding 55k vs 63

When I saw what BMW M5 E60 drivers were having to do in order to have fun, I said screw it. I am sure the AMG63 motors will be absolutely awesome, but if its naturally asprated it will be similar to the M5, and I dont want to wind up the motor into jail territory in order to have fun - 95% of my driving is UNDER 100MPH, and thats where I want to have 95% of my FUN

No point in buying a car and having to risk going to jail to enjoy it. For that reason I made sure that I purchased one of the last CLS55 motors

I can't imagine the 0-60 on the CLS63 will be anything but faster than the CLS55. Have you ever seen AMG go backwards? OK, the W208 vs W209 CLK55 0-60 times don't count. LOL
I'm thinking the 0-60 times for the CLS63 will be 4.5 to maybe 4.3 sec.

The CLS55 is running 4.2-4.3, at least according to Car and Driver.

AMG-1,

you have no idea.

The 6.3 is 1.3lt bigger then the M5 to try and keep up.

They have taken a huge step backwards by going n/a, and yes 55ft/lbs is not much really

Plus the sky is the limit for mods on the s55 same as the ttV12's.

I certainly would like to see a torque curve on that engine -- has anyone seen one?

yeah...but Car and Driver also said my W209 CLK55 should be running 0-60 in 4.5 sec. Sure dudes.....I don't think I will ever see those figures in my car ever!

I was talking about MBUSA...they say the CLS55 should do 0-60 in 4.5 sec.
So when the CLS63 comes out, I can't imagine the 0-60 times published by MBUSA will be slower. If anything the CLS63 0-60 should be at least 4.5 sec or faster. This is my guess from MBUSA....not Car and Driver. C/D will get some ridiculous number....don't worry.

Why the 63 for "twisty stuff"?

Well I went to the local dealer (Schumacher) today and now have no idea what to do!

First I asked about ordering a CLS55. Apparently orders are still being accepted, with about a five month build/transport time. The lease on my Lexus SC430 matures in July, he said I'd have to order about now to get the car by then.

According to the salesman, first USA deliveries of CLS63 and CLS550 will be around September 2006.

On the showroom floor, there was a gorgeous Brabus CLS500 with 20" Vellano wheels for $99k. No engine mods, just exhaust plus interior and exterior goodies. As I was checking it out, another salesman came up to put a "sold" sign on it!

Then there was a stunning graphite Designo CLS500 with Lorinser package (included 20" RS8 wheels, lowering springs, roof and tail spoilers, sideskirts, front and rear bumpers, and exhaust). AWESOME! But $107k and still with 302hp. The CLS in graphite looked just amazing with the roof spoiler and lowered suspension on the 20" wheels.

After seeing the Designo package in person and aero treatments, I may not be able to resist them! But I definitely want more than 300hp. Maybe I can do without the 450-500hp of AMG though ? The new 5.5L DOHC 32v V8 with around 380hp may be a good compromise with the 7 speed tranny.

So now I'm considering placing a deposit for a Designo CLS550, then have the Lorinser aero kit installed followed by Vellano 20" forged wheels and lowering (probably Star Diagnostics). Tough decisions...

PS -- Dealer also told me that a CLS65 will absolutely be coming, but not for 2007. I told him if the CLS600 existed he'd already have my sale!

Maybe the CLS65 will be the new 6.3 V-8 turbo we keep hearing about?

Now there's a scoop. Wow....don't even think the Benz Rumor sites are running with that info. Interesting.

Emercedesbenz.com germancarfans.com nothing.
