cls55 w/030 or cls63

What would the main reasons be for waiting for a cls63 vs. being able to get a cls55 with the 030 perf package? Price isn't the driver for me. i'm wondering what main differences will be in the cls63 besides the engine.

Is the 030 perf package going to be available for the cls63 right away or is that going to come later like it did for the cls55.

Thumbs up Cls55-030 Rules

The CLS63 will be Normally Aspirated (no Supercharger), will have a 7 speed automatic trans. instead of the current 5 speed automatic trans. It will have approx 515 HP and 465 lb. ft. of torque and have a displacement of 6.3 liters with a red line of 7,300 RPMs and will have Paddle-Shift Levers instead of the current buttons on the back of the steering wheel.

Whether these specifications are a reason to wait for the CLS63 instead of buying a CLS55-030 is a matter of how you like your car's performance to be delivered. The 63 Motor will be a lot busier producing it's performance for you (higher RPMs & more shifting) than the 55K motor is. More of a race car like attitude. The 55K Motor is more after market tuner friendly and will ultimately produce more HP @ WAY MORE TORQUE than the 63 Motor will. Also the 55K Motor, being the Torque Monster it is, is not nearly as busy when performing for you.

As far as the 030 Performance Package being offered up front for the CLS63, I do not know, and there has not been any info. on the C219 Forum about this. It is to early to tell what MB has in mind for this option on the CLS63.

I am biased , concerning the CLS55-030, but for what it is worth it does not get any better than the CLS55-030 for a Luxury Sports Sedan!! A perfect example was the other night, my wife and I went up to LA for an old friends wife's 60th. birthday party and we took another couple with us who were 20 years our senior and they absolutely fell in love with the car and could not get over how nice the interior was and how quiet and smooth the car was. Of course I did not let the BEAST out of the bottle but it shows how versatile the car is. The ultimate cruiser one moment and then with just a push on the throttle it becomes a BEAST.

If you are leaning towards the CLS55-030 you better act quickly because that car can no longer be ordered from MB and only what has been built and not sold is what is available now!! Good luck on your search. - Bob

Options/pricing for the CLS63 are still unknown. I would think a 030 Performance Package will be offered though probably not at introduction. Expect it too have the 19" AMG multi-piece wheels, Vmax increase, Alcantara steering wheel, and LSD. From what I've read the CLS63 will come standard with the composite front disc brakes of the CLS55-030.

I think the CLS63 will be a good bit more costly than the CLS55 but only time will tell. The pricing on the new S series certainly surprised me!

After doing a lot of thinking, I went with a very sweet CLS55 -- Designo Graphite with only a few options (lighting, premium) but huge $$$ back from MSRP. I probably won't mess with it much, as most of my driving is below 100 mph, but there is always ECU/headers/pulley/TB upgrade and LSD if I want more.

The 63 will be more or less "maxed out" from a power standpoint from the factory. Anything that increases torque (like a supercharger!) will probably tear apart the 7sp transmission. The good thing is that it will be bloody fast as is, no expensive modifications will be necessary to thoroughly whip the M5/M6 at any speed. The CLS55 may not be able to keep up with an M5/M6 above 100mph, at least in stock form.

After four years I'll be ready to move on from the CLS55... no doubt by then there will be a turbocharged version of the CLS63, a CLS65, or something even better... hopefully with four wheel drive to get all that massive power to the ground!
