What dealership did you buy the car from in Florida?

About three weeks ago, I was at the dealership picking up my CLS500 after being serviced and the dealer had a CLS63 coming off the truck. I was told that the car was supposed to be the first 63 to be delivered, but the order was cancelled by the purchaser.

Being at the right place at the right time, I decided to trade in the 500 for the 63.

Up to this point, the car had been amazing to drive, although I had been driving within the break in period parameters.

I had been anxiously waiting to get through the 1000 mile break in period so I can really put the car to the test. That mark occured this morning on my way to work.

As soon as I got on the freeway, I was getting ready to open her up. I pressed on the accelerator ------ instead of taking off, the engine shuttered, and began to loose power. The check engine light then came on.

I quickly pulled over and shut off the car. I opened the gas tank to let it air out (just in case there was some sort of pressure issue). I put the cap back on and tried to start the car again. It started, but the engine shook, the light came on, and I quickly shut it off.

The car has since been towed to MB and they are currently trying to source the problem. 1014 miles on it, I hope this is not the start of something more serious.

Anyone have any issues like this?

Michael
Michael:

Similar things have happened with 05-06 E55's and 06 Porsche 997's but mostly with no check engine light. The lack of the idiot light generally leaves the techs and MB at a loss, so at least you have some sort of code they can work with. BTW, I live and work in Boca and used to live on the beach in Ft Laud then Hillsboro Mile.

Aren't you supposed to get it checked out after the 1000 mile mark? Like bring it in and then slowly increase the load?

I'm going to be extra careful with my baby...

But hopefully MB will be able to fix your 63!

Isn't the free check up around there anyways as well? Just because you hit 1000 doesn't mean that the engine is instantly ready for full throttle.

Besides isn't the engine already broken in...it's just the rest of the car that needs to be...?

According to my service manager, the 1000 mile breakin period is actually no longer needed on new engines..............and I followed it anyway and this still happened.

Just be thankful it actually gave a MIL. All of the problems with my 55 are "normal" 'cause there's no codes. Remember, no MIL = nothing wrong.

The AMG engines are actually broken in at the factory. It's the rest of the car that requires a break-in.

I had the mechanic and salesman tell me the best way to break an AMG in is to drive it like a madman as soon as you get it. I was melting the tires on my E55 as soon as they took it off the truck on the first test drive before I signed the paperwork.

I think someone on the board did do that. I hope you had them do an oil change after the first 100 miles like he did.

Yikes, remember the engine may have had some bench time but the rest of the drivetrain needs to be broken in as directed.

MB sourced the problem....bad fuel. This is the same issue I heard some 911 owners have (althougth it has not happened to my 911).

I will get the car back when I get back from Vaca and see for myself.

Bad gas eh? Some Beano will clear that up.

Whats up with your car? No codes means it takes much longer to determine a problem b/c first you have to re-create it. Sometimes that is hard to do

Ex. Client with C230 insists that a/c intermittently starts blowing warm air. No codes, can not duplicate it at all. Tech drives it, foreman drives it, etc. etc. and it blows ice cold. Owner insists and gives authorization for more testing. Guy who basically just test drives cars to make them break..... FINALLY got the a/c to blow warm air after 2 weeks straight of road testing. Car was diagnosed and repaired the next day when the part came in. What makes that difficult, is that most owners would not want to leave there vehicle in service that long.

True diagnosis can take some time, shotgunning parts on the car using an educated guess usually creates more headache for everyone.

I got the car back this morning. Full tank of gas and all seems well! If now I can only remember which station I went to when I filled the car last - I need to make sure I avoid it.
