CLS63 vs. E55

I just took delivery of my '07 CLS63 (equipped with most options including the 030 Performance Package). I had previously driven a '04 E55. This car gets used for commuting and frequent 100 mile round trips on fast highways. I have already made several long trips and have the following early observations:

The first thing I noticed was the brakes. Much better pedal feel with the CLS63 than the E55. I am not sure if this is due to no "fly by wire" in the CLS63 or the 030 Package, but the brakes are significantly improved in the CLS63.

The CLS63 doesn't have the "hole shot" off the line feel of the E55, but the combination of the CLS63 motor and 7 speed transmission (in sport mode) is much smoother. I always found the transmission in the E55 to be fairly abrupt, particularly around town. The CLS63 feels quicker at highway speeds.

I really noticed the difference in packaging between the 2 cars - the CLS63 is a much tighter and agile car than the E55. I am pleasantly surprised at how much better I find the CLS63. The steering in the CLS63 is more responsive and direct. I wonder how much of the difference is inherent in the CLS vs. the E-Class and if there is any contribution in drivability from the 030 Package.

I am curious to see how my experience compares with others – thanks!

I had the same experience when I test drove the CLS63. I also have the 04 E55. So your experience matches mine almost exactly. I did not drive one with the 030 package, so I was wondering how the ride differs with the 030 and without the 030.

Good to hear the brakes are better. That brake by wire thing was crappy.
