CLS rear seat...

please tell me what feedback you've gotten from people who've sat in the rear seat of your CLS. was it comfortable, and roomy enough for adults during a couple of road hours? i'm asking because the GF and i probably will be in the back seat of a CLS for a couple hours daily over the course of a week. i was in the rear of one some months ago and i just can't recall my impressions. thanks.

i must agree almost entirely. well, ALMOST entirely. occasionally size does matter, especially insofar as that rear seating is concerned. ;-)

okay, so my GF just read my last post and chastised me for being too suggetive.
now, i must clarify a bit... although i won't rule out anything that could possibly occur in the rear of that passenger compartment, i expect that mostly we'll be driven around germany in the back of a CLS55 in the near future. while that's a pretty good thing, i recall the CLS being somewhat cramped in the rear. admittedly, it's called a coupe outright, so i shouldn't be surprised by the lack of liebestraum. anyway, if it's too restrictive, i might try to arrange for an E or a new S. no matter which of the three, i think it'll work out just great with my GF in the back seat with me. but please don't read too far into that back seat, okay?

That hardest part about the back seat is getting in and out and how tall is the person sitting in front of you. Besides that they are perfect for someone no taller then 6'.

Also, keep in mind that the back windows are not the best for site seeing. Kinda slim and narrow. You might have to lean forward to look out.

well, it'll be just the driver, and me and my GF.

i'm at MB lauderdale now, so i'll check out a CLS. okay, there's no CLS on the floor. i'll have to get a seller and go through that nonsense to try one outside.

off i go...

As somebody who has owned both I feel qualified to offer my own observations

E55 - no problems for any height of driver or rear passenger - front seats can be adjusted for driver comfort leaving plenty of leg and headroom for rear passenger

CLS55 - definitely an issue - I am only 5'10" and love my driving position - arms and legs slightly bent (with shoulders against seat my wrist is on top of steering wheel - classic touring car position).

BUT if someone over 5' 8" gets in the back seat I have to move my seat forward - even then, the rear passenger is almost touching the roof with his head.

I am not sure that I would want to spend several hours in the back seat - all depends on what your girlfriend looks like!!!!!

siswati...

well, MB lauderdale now requires that to log out a key, the sales reps MUST fill out a lead card. i said, "no thanks," and tried the E on the floor. that seemed somewhat cramped for hours-at-a-time drives. i think i'm going to try to get an S for the touring days. thanks just the same for your observations.

about my GF...

there was a time when she was chased by celebrities and athletes and commoners alike, whether she was skiing on aspen mountain or talking on a phone in an airport or in a courtroom (where she argued cases daily). now we're years down the road...and she somehow settled on me. go figure! anyway, all i'm saying is that there probably aren't all that many people who would not care to share a back seat with her.

I own both the CLS and the E, There is no way i would ride in the back of the CLS for any length of time (i'm only 5'10"). I would have no problem riding in the back of the E...that's if I rode in the back, but I don't.

I don't know, i am 5'10 and fit in the back seat of my CLS500 just fine, just as long as the fronts seats are not so far back it is perfectly comfortable.

I've been trying to show leg room for a long time now... should have done a search, this would have answered all your questions

I don't mind it. I'm 6'1", 215lbs. Still young though so I might be a little more agile than some of the previous posters.

Anyone over 5'11" would not like the backseat. It is comfy for smaller people.

One neat thing is the center console and ac vent that split tha backseat. Allows the riders a 12v plug and a nice spot to rest the ole elbows. Overall if you are not over 5'11" you should fit nicely. Also under 200lbs I like it, it is like riding in a small rocket ship.

Its not too bad for short runs around town...but for long drives I would rather be in the E....but the CLS looks really good- its a trade off.

dilemma resolved...

we had a G55 for the entire stay. :-)

and we also drove a CLS63 several times, but neither of us were in the rear seat.

no parking...

the only one in the back seat of the G55 was me. the GF took the front articulated passenger seat and helped our driver navigate germany. actually, i preferred the back seat for a change.
the CLS63 with 030 was terrific in every way. the new engine definitely doesn't have that kompressor punch, but it performs just as well in a more subtle way. and the sound is awesome. while the 55k sounds like a muffled helicopter under hard acceleration, the 63 sounds more ferrari-like. either way, those AMG cars are a blast!

Here in Jakarta Indonesia 95% of the people that own a Merc have a driver. The CLS is 1 of the most unpopular cars here just for the reasons described above. Resale value sucks as well. I know someone who bought an 05 and it now has 5000 kms on it and he has been offered only 60% of what he paid for it. You can buy a new 06 for about 70% of what they were pricing it for a few months ago. It is so unpopular it is the reason I bought my e instead of the cls

i sat in the rear seat in a showroom and i remember it being small. looking from the outside, you would think it would have tons on room i the back. it's just the opposite. go figure. if you want comfy, the s is a dream. tons of space! for long trips, the s would be my choice. even an e would be better than the cls.
