This provides an excellent opportunity to upgrade your rims. I would go for some beefy Brabus Monoblocks. And let the potholes beware.

I betcha something is not right with your rims.

Sounds reasonable...But I asked the serv. mgr...he said that he has seen this before.

Anyone have any ideas of how I should go about having the rim tested to prove it was a manuf. defect? Obviously, they would rather not admit it and just have my insurance take care of it. help...

to me it does not look like a defect. 40 MPH is quite a high speed and depending on how the wheel was hit it easily could sustain that damage. The tires on the CLS are very low profile and this seems very probable.

20+ to list......
Damn, sorry to hear and see what happened, with a hole that deep, not even the forged wheels can sustain the impact force, good luck, and please keep up updated with what MB is going to do with your case.

You are correct on the rim sustaining more damage due to low profile tires...I am certainly not gonna try and produce this result, jeez. I suppose it can burst at the seam. I wonder if there are statistics on "rim splitting"

due to the stiff short sidewalls almost all the shock of the bumps are transmitted to the wheels. It looks like the bump hit the middle of of the wheel which may have sheared the wheel.

Make sure you get your airmatic strut checked as well, it must have taken one hell of an impact. Too bad no body shops have a large CMM like the factory to see if it still is within spec.

Splits in rims are not uncommon, I've even seen an SL65 wheel with a split in it. As mentioned before, when you only have a couple inches of rubber, the rims take a beating.

People are moving to the Carolinas like crazy...the state/city is having a tough time, apparently to keep up the roads from the damage due to all the construction traffic...I'll bet the averge age of a home in my area is 10 years at the most.
