How is this really an imporovement over the stock 55/63 looks? I just see it as potential for damage.

You need to see them in person or some up close pics, do a search and you will see its a great addition IMO. Yes, its not for everyone especially those who are not cinder block saavy.

I liked it because it complimented the AMG look.

Lowered cars already have potential for damage but yes do agree you have to be a little more careful.

I really like that front lip. I was thinking about buying it and wrapping in carbon fiber but my car is lowered and I am thinking I might just run it into everything. Also wraping it in carbon fiber is just asking for alot or repair money haha.

Yes they are. Those are Carlsson 1/16 ultra lights.
