powder coat the wheels
Anyone know of a good place in OC/LA I can get the stock wheels powder coated?
Do you see any issues (current paint layer, etc...) with doing that?
How much does that cost usually?
How well does it last?
Are there different ways of doing it?
Thanks guys

Mercedes-Benz
What color do you want them powder coated? For the powder to adhere it will basically require them to completely blast off whatever is on the wheel... which is typically a thick powder coating if it is a mercedes-benz wheel. You can't powder over powder because you will get delamination and I'm sure you wouldn't like that.
If they strip the wheel all the way down to the aluminum, I would want at least 120 microns of powder on the face of the wheel, and at least 40 microns on the backside of the spokes. This will give you a durable finish.
Your mercedes wheel probably has 200 microns or more of powder coating on the face and at least 80 on the backside... this will make a very long lasting wheel.
You might be better off just having them painted (liquid). That way you won't run into delamination issues and you will still have excellent corrosion protection.

my buddy has a place in simi valley called Pyramid Powder Coating and they do these kind of specialty jobs. Dont have a price because it varies, they generally do a great job, I would do it with them 100% if I would do it.....

My buddy did an excellent job on my glazed black wheels(s Pics of my 20's thread). I got them done free but I think it ranges betw. 1100-1400 all together. Anyway its located in the valley and they are really experienced, What wheels r u doing it for? I hope its not ur stocks cause I've seen b4 on the Cls and it does'nt look good at all... I was in the shop today and he had some slightly used 5 spoke Maya's for sale, Already painted with a chrome lip and tires and I think those would look really clean on a white Cls. Let me know if you are interested. I'll PM you my #...

They looked really similar to these but they were all black with a chrome lip. I think he has getting rid of them for around $3000-3400 w/tires. But they were definetly in good condition. Heres a link to more pics

Okay! One more question about this.
What happens to the current layer that is on the wheels? how do they get rid of that? Do they melt it off somehow ? I have a bad feeling about this, I think I might ugly up the wheels pretty bad.

From what i understand the portion of the rim that they are going to powder coat they have to make the surface rough so the powdercoat adheres to it.. once this is done the refinish the entire wheel.. So in essence the portion that they are not going to powdercoat should be just fine.
