I would say if its more than a year old, B&G Systems has a AC duct flush to fix this problem. Check for an B&G Systems certified shop to do this service.
Also, no matter how gross it may sound, I have heard that some ducts had dead rats in it. Hopefully you are not in New York.
A hint from my own experience:
1. Check for clogging of the evaporator drain line-it should drip condensate water freely.
2. 3-4 minutes before your turn your car off, first turn off just the ac switch while leaving the fan switch on so that any condensate can drain off. This is a good preventative measure every car owner.

the last 2 tips from m berman are right on...for all cars. NOTHING prevents odors, keeps the AC vents themselves fresher and freer of mold, etc. than the simple procedures recommended by m berman.

thanks, i'll give that a shot. the odor usually go away after about a minute of running the ac. hopefully the drain off will fix the problem
