Correct Gear

I still only have 900 miles on the CLS but I had 2 encounters today. (Magnum with an exhaust-hemi, and a 750IL). With the magnum I was in the correct gear (1st) from a roll and that was pretty easy although kudos to the hemi. The BMW I gave him a full car length running start before I floored it. I think I was in 3rd around 40mph and I am not sure if it downshifted to 2 or not. ( 1st would have been better since we were under 50-but that is not going to happen in "D") We were dead even for 1-2 seconds until I hit the power band and then I pulled.
I hope as I get more miles on, the tranmission will downshift to the maximum gear so I don't have to remember to use the paddles to get into the right gear.
FYI - my charcoal filters are still in. I want to see how fast the car feels before I pull them out in the next thousand miles or so.

Car will definitely not shift down to first, probably ever above 5mph. Once just as a test with ESP on I totally floored it from a stop. Car was in first, really not much happening at first because the ESP light kept flickering as the car get going about 12-15 mph. Once the ESP let go the gad damn thing threw me in my seat so hard I almost soiled my shorts. It was almost like a turbo lag, pretty funny but I wouldnt recommend it. Anyhow, that is probably the reason it wont shift down to 1st, because if would rev the S*** out of the engine super fast and would be dangerous in my opinion. As far as the highway pulls I often find that the first pull the tranny is reluctant to shift all the way down from 7th to 3rd or 4th, it almost shifts in like two stages, but after the first time it goes pretty good on future attempts.

In my trials I have foudn that if you are in "S" mode and mash the gas (making sure to depress the kickdown button) while moving, you will usually kick down to an agressive gear for your speed. I find it a pain to quickly switch to paddles while in S or C because you need one tap just to engage the M mode. Usually I need to kick down at least 2 gears so I've found that it takes longer to pull the paddle 3 times as opposed to letting the tranny do it. However this will only work in S. C is way to docile.

Thanks for the comments.
I did hit the kickdown switch. I am not sure it went down to 2 or 3. So, I was even with the BMW for about 1-2 seconds before the 63 engine kicked into its groove so to speak.

What I usually do when I am about to race someone on a highway is I will manually shift down to 4th gear when I get near the victim, then when I know its on, I'll shift to 3rd gear (while giving it a little gas to keep the car moving) and as soon as I pin it there is no lag or delay, it just takes off. I suggest that if you aren't really into the whole shifting thing, just leave the tranny in 5th gear when cruising on a highway (at like 60 or 70). This way anytime you need instant speed, flooring it to kickdown should only mean you are downshifting 2 gears instead of 4 which is a huge savings in time. I also find that 7th gear is pretty similiar to 6th, I only use 7th gear if I really feel like I'm just gonna cruise.

Nice kill, was it a 750il or 750li? The old or new bimmer?

Thanks for your tips.
It was the new style BMW. You can tell from the rear lights as the guy passed me very quick after I braked hard for 3 seconds - he just blew past me. I braked hard so he knew it was over and because it was dangerous staying at that speed. The BMW didn't shut it down because I didn't think he wanted to meet up with me at a light down the road. I think he should have shut it down too, but all to its own. Funny thing, 1 minute later, I saw a cop drive by, so it I was very lucky.
