tire alert!!
Just installed my new wheels as some of you may have seen.. the tires are 255/30/20 and 305/25/20 Yokahma Advant sports, NOW this is the problem the front tires when turned to the left or right look flat the side walls completely break down. I have had many cars with small side walls always Perrelli and never any break down of the side walls. Any one with this size tire have this problem? or have you looked? What tires are you using? input please and go take a look at your front side walls when turned..

Same Concern...
Greetings to all...
I'm new to your forum & picked up my CLS 55 in May and loving every minute in it so far.
Mine came upgraded with 255/30ZR20 front & 295/25ZR20 rear - Michelin Sport Pilots mounted on CEC signature wheels.
I'm not used to having anything over 18's & also wondered about how much is normal sidewall compression.
Any PSI recommendations out there for wheels this size?
Thanks.

I'm rolling on 20's
I've kept tires at 40 psi and seems to ride / handle crisply. Below 40, I've seen the freaky look of the side walls almost disappearing when the wheel is fully turned to one side or the other.
I didn't pick my wheels, too Bling for my taste, but I think they are unique looking. Here are some pix from CEC wheels to give you an idea of what the rims my CLS 55 came on.
According to the dealer, a Nascar guy bought the car in Arizona, moved to LA in January, put on the wheels, and traded it in with only 9K miles on it for a G 55. I wonder who the Nascar guy was and why anyone would trade such a great car for a G class.
Thanks again for your input.

Thanks Kevin
I called the CEC guys and they recommended 4 psi above stock. They also warned if underinflated for too long, the side walls can get damaged, so will check my pressures atleast once a week or so. Since stock is 38 & 41, I guess I'll go with 42 & 45.
This is a great site, I'm glad I came across you guys.

ok, so here is how mine looks with the wheel fully turn to left. as i mentioned, this is normal with any brand tires. keep in mind that the angle of the wheels is slightly tilted, which will cause this. the only time when your tires are in this state, is when doing u-turns. probably no more than 15mph... any faster than that, the rear end will go loose.

I think having 44 and 46 psi in the tires is a bit too much? im not sure myself but it just sounds like too much....Vadim (clk55) would know the answer to this for sure....

As for the wheels, since the current tread already has about 2K on them, I'm gonna ride them out for now. The funny thing is that you can't believe how many compliments I get on them from other MB & BMW owners (friends & strangers alike). I think it is because the other CLS's in the area all ride on stock AMG rims.
Here's a blow up of my avatar to see the stance of the car.

No prob... I agree, not my choice for rims, but an outstanding car. After passing up an E55, couldn't believe my eyes when my friend told me what was on the lot for sale, AMG with 030 package, for $78K with only 9K miles.

What other options came with your car that you purchased for 78k with 030?
I'm trying to price them out so that I know what I should be paying.
I couldn't find one with 030.
However, I did find a nice one with every option except phone, distronic, and 030 with 9k miles for 77k.
Thanks

Getting rid of the Yokahama tires and going with Continental Contact sport 3.I went to MBZ of Escondido today they had a few cars with these tires and let me tell you they are the best looking tires I have yet to see. The tread pattern is great and the over all side wall is just great also. Will be installed Friday morning.

Essentially those are the main 2 options that I don't have either, but I could care less about distronic, but I am thinking about installing the completer kit to get bluetooth into the COMMAND system. From older threads on this board, the ~ $2000 dealers want is a steep price, but I'm thinking about it.
Otherwise, the aftermarket changes the previous owner added were the rims & a professional tint on all windows. Still waiting to get pulled over, way too dark for So Calif laws, but does makse the car look great.
When I looked on autotrader (back in April) to see if I was getting a good deal, I didn't see any cars in the area under $80k or less then 15K miles, so I'm happy. Bluebook / CarFax on the car at the time was $87k.

I thought this thread was about Tires? Well continentals are on.. They kick azz!! 51psi is just what you need with low pro tires. The response is great the rides is smooth and best of all they look great I feel safe driving the speed limit lets just say the Yokahamas are just way to soft, yes they do cost the most so I thought they would be the best BUTT.. This is JMO but I sure do love these Cont sport 3's..

sorry...
51 psi ? i thought the max psi recommended on most tires was 50 psi.
With CEC wheels, I'll stick with their recommendation of 4 psi above stock for their 20" rims for now. I asked this above, but what are other pressures being recommended ?

The sidewall of the cont. 3's say 51psi. So when cold put 45psi and when they warm up they should reach about 48-49psi. If you look at the sidewalls of these tires they do not really touch the ground but instead they curve to the center of the tire which take the pressure off the sidewalls. So more psi and less wieght on the walls = My #1 choice in tires this size
